i am simply not ready to accept "Julius Randle: Playoff Riser" just yet

either it will or it won't imo

i officially predict that in the 2025-26 NBA season the Minnesota Timberwolves will go 52-30, finish 3rd in the West and lose in the first round of the playoffs

I'm giving in-class essay exams with unlimited handwritten notes allowed and guess what, my issues with devices in class basically vanished lol

These kids are skipping class and dicking around on their phone during lecture because they are extremely smart and can get by without working their hardest. Also, please write about another school!!!

You have to be a world class dumbass to attribute students skipping class or not doing the reading to "ideological bubbles" and "liberal bias"

favorite moments: the little pause before Stevens says "Gherkin' It", DeepFuckingValue just being a normal stock market dickhead wanting to see a stock go from $4 to $15 dollars and then accidentally becoming the figurehead of a demented movement, the Young Neighbours track over the opening credits

one fun thing about watching this in 2025 is wondering if these dudes are STILL predicting the upcoming mother of all short sales. Seems like it would be difficult to sustain that level of delusion for such a long time but then again people do really really love reducing dissonance
verydumbidiot.bsky.social
That said, I think this is a very fitting companion piece to When Prophecy Fails (1956), Leon Festinger's classic treatise on cognitive dissonance. Stevens makes the explicit connection to QAnon and I would have enjoyed a longer discussion of the parallels between the two movements

i think one issue is that I don't think he really laid the groundwork for the final conclusion of "aren't all stocks meme stocks if you really think about it?" very well. It is also a structural problem to be focusing at a group of very sad losers rather than a malicious set of fraudsters

I watched this 150 minute youtube video in another trade with Cory. In exchange, he will watch The Conversation (1974). I found this to be a little bit more watchable at the shot-for-shot level (lots of funny reddit posts to look at) but less compelling at the macro level than the mikkelsen twins

My father-in-law is a builder.

It’s difficult to get his attention in a magnificent space because he’s lost in wonder. We were near Spruce Tree Centre together and I asked him what it would cost to build it today. I will never forget his answer…

“We can’t, we don’t know how.”

Missing (1982): An interesting companion to White Material (2009) in terms of waiting too long to bail. The first 30 minutes were pretty fucking chilling given current events! I appreciate that Costa-Gavros never let Ed be right about anything (including impotently threatening to sue at the end)

Been listening to this Geese record that everybody loves (its quite good). Pretty crazy that we've entered into an era of Yeasayer nostalgia

stuff I didn't like: (1) Avanti Q's change of heart felt almost like deus ex machina; we didn't spend enough time with him to set up that level of motivational shift (2) Lockjaw's coda, even if it did got us a sublime Jim Downey line read and (3) Lockjaw's over-obvious critique of Willa's make-up
