What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Lifting/restraining echidnas for veterinary exams. Would definitely do again if it came up, of course. I was very good at it.
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Archival research feels like it’s full of these, but then there’s always one throwback archive with a microfiche machine or a paper catalogue (or, indeed: NARA)
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Summer of '95 I had a job assembling single-use film cameras, which I did enough that I can still perform the actions. I don't think they even sell them anymore, but even if they do I'm certainly never going to be making them again!

Stood in line an hour to pick up the local smokehouse thxg meal and it better be incredible tomorrow. I’ll make pies for tomorrow and Friday, when we gather as a multi-household family. If you’re also gathering this week, may you have a successful visit!

That darning/mending loom thing that gets advertised to me endlessly on IG helped me fix a hole in my favorite sweater! Not very WELL, but it’s at less risk of fully unraveling now, lol

There is some pest that bites me and only me? and lives inside my house and, yadda yadda yadda, I’ve just disassembled and rebuilt a cabinet that’s been standing in my house since idk when and definitely does not seem ever to have been infested with bugs after all 😒 but at least it stands square now

Not loving the palpable tension online, offline, and specifically in my home once my kid learned we’re having salmon for dinner (it’s currently disfavored)

Thrilling to reread The Handmaid’s Tale because it’s what my kid is studying in AP English right now and to realize that Offred appears to be GenZ based on timeline hints. What a time to be alive

Well, the wait was worth it—my kid enjoyed Blazing Saddles and needed only a few references explained, like ptomaine poisoning 🥴

Local elementary school is back in session today which can mean many things but one predominates: it’s scream season (from now until after Memorial Day)

Husband just got himself some fresh glasses frames, and now we both look like old timey NASA types—I’ve got the Katherine Johnson browline specs; he’s got nerd frames like fictional administrator Tom Paine in For All Mankind. Let’s get that Apollo program going, folks!

With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

When I met Ryan Coogler several years ago, we were standing in a group of people chatting, when a woman with visible hearing aids walked up, and he casually began to sign the whole conversation so she could participate. She mouthed “thank you”. He nodded and just kept doing his thing.

I would like one of these shirts and I don’t even live in New York
The wonderful thing about New York being a center of Jewish culture is that there's going to be a lot of very cool "Jews for Mamdani" posters and shirts and merch.

I think that's super dope!
I'm hearing a lot of "Jews in New York are scared" today. So, a couple of thoughts: 1) Jews should be angry, not scared. We were targeted with a relentless, heavily funded barrage of lies playing off of real fears of antisemitism by a man who came within 7 points of winning. That reeks of contempt.>

1/Trump has now threatened to target US cities as "Democrat Power Center". But they are actually the economic power center of the US economy. Targeting these cities will have far reaching impact on US markets, innovation, and growth. Tariffs would pail in comparison

So many things, so many! But the most amusing is The Princess Bride (book). He’d always elided and summarized parts I might find boring, so when he read it to me I thought that was what he was doing…and then I saw the two-toned text that read exactly the same. It was a dad joke years in the making
Okay you guys, what’s the best book, movie, or TV show your dad introduced you to

If you think climate change has gotten worse during your lifetime, you're right and there's a good reason.

If you're Gen X like me, more than 3/4 of fossil fuel CO₂ emissions have occurred in your lifetime. Even if you're a Millennial, it's at least half.

Facebook decided to suspend my account because of a piece (below) I wrote Monday about violence which in no way advocates for it (but does point out who is violent in the current ruckus).
