Come work in our lab! All the usual awesome things apply about doing exciting science, plus this one might save the world! @sulpis.bsky.social hiring a 2 year position to observe and model deep ocean processes using high-pressure reactors.

*Goes to gather a bunch of forams to be dissolved* 😅

Today was a hard day for Ph.D. students who found out that they can no longer apply for NSF's prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship Program. "Devastating“ was how one student described it to me. #GradSchool #NSFGRFP

Three tariff announcements tonight, each one is dumber than the last. I don’t even know how to read this except as a way for the White House to exempt US pharma multinationals (who import a lot but are always building *something*) and push out smaller foreign competitors.
Starting October 1st, 2025, we will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product, unless a Company IS BUILDING their Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant in America. “IS BUILDING” will be defined as, “breaking ground” and/or “under construction.” There will, therefore, be no Tariff on these Pharmaceutical Products if construction has started. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

This study led by @aaronferderer.bsky.social tested how 5 diatom species respond to broad ranges of seawater carbonate conditions. Goal was to determine carbonate chemistry niches and to inform Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) and Ocean Acidification (OA)

For chemist Kris Hansen, 3M was a family affair; her father was a creator of the company’s N95 face masks.

Yet, after she found 3M’s forever chemicals in human blood, the company repeatedly doubted her work and stopped her research on the chemicals.

Toxic Gaslighting: How 3M Executives Convinced a Scientist the Forever Chemicals She Found in Human Blood Were Safe
Decades ago, Kris Hansen showed 3M that its PFAS chemicals were in people’s bodies. Her bosses halted her work. As the EPA now forces the removal of the chemicals from drinking water, she wrestles wit...

New Mexico's economy is a fraction of the size of New York City's.

If they can enact universal childcare — and relieve working families of a crushing cost burden — surely we can too.

It's just a question of political will.
New Mexico will be the first state to make child care free
The program, which is expected to save families $12,000 per child annually, is available to all residents regardless of income.

I had an engagement with blogger, failed California gubernatorial candidate, and self-identified reporter Michael Shellenberger this past week, which started out being about this new paper being heralded by climate skeptics as disproving global sea-level acceleration. (LONG 🧵)
