Writer and film history researcher focusing especially on the silent/pre-Code eras (and the overlooked faces within). I talk a lot about Jean Harlow. linktr.ee/vitaphonezone

I wrote a bit about June Harlow, a 1950s burlesque queen and film hopeful who built a solid career based partially off her resemblance to her ‘aunt’ Jean Harlow—showing that being a fake Nepo Niece can carry you pretty far. open.substack.com/pub/vitaphon...
June, not Jean: Harlow's Nicest 'Niece'
A particularly relevant and refreshingly inarguable fact about Jean Harlow is that she was an only child.

My favorite photo of birthday boy Groucho, photographed by Ted Allan for A Day at the Races (1937). A good reminder not to take anything too seriously today.

It’s fine. I’d watch an even worse film because I deeply understand the laundress Loren/anarchist Newman dynamic here.

The worst movie with the hottest people in it.

Partial to this pose as well (and its press caption). “Ida dearly loves to don outlandish makeup, and fairly shrieks ‘Isn't it wonderful!’ whenever someone says she looks horrible.”

I love the motion blur of Ida Lupino’s earrings in this publicity portrait for The Light That Failed (1939).

Ida Lupino getting a different flavor of glamour treatment from photographer Scotty Welbourne in a promo for “They Drive By Night” (1940)
Lupino, made up to look drab and dreary, poses for a studio photo with a distorted expression on her face.

Motion Picture magazine, March 1931.
Speaking of Mr. Hays reminds us that he's after the boys who give pictures sexy titles. Even Will knows how disappointing it is to see a picture that isn't half so hot as its title.

This is not a perfect or great film but it’s gorgeous, and especially entertaining if you approach it from the angle of John Wayne talking to his imaginary girlfriend (or read about Mitchum getting kicked off it for various apocryphal reasons). CinemaScope baby!! (Joe Strummer voice) Lauren Bacall!!
