Hello Bluesky!

I'm Núria, a scientist turned scientific illustrator based in Japan.

During my PhD I worked with microtubules and microtubule end binding proteins, so that is in my banner. It is a rather old image, but I still love it.

Something is tricky about this image 👇
Image of a microtubule in cyan with end binding proteins bound to it in yellow.

How did a brain gene end up behaving like a virus? Research has shown that there is an evolutionary connection between Arc, retroviruses, and virus-like genetic elements called retrotransposons.

A comparison of the structures of dArc1 (capsid: 6TAP; pentamer: 6TAR), the retrovirus HIV (capsid: 3J3Q; pentamer: 7URN), and the retrotransposon Ty3 (6R24). Pentamers are shown in orange, and hexamers in yellow in the upper panel. In the lower panel, pentamers are shown with monomers colored in different shades of orange.

Because we always see the grey matter surface of the brain, but the white matter shape is so beautiful that I just wanted to play a bit with it.

Which is your favourite imaging data?

The Japan Pavilion at the #EXPO2025 was all about sustainability. The cutest room had Hello Kitty algae. Did you know that algae can absorb 14 times as much CO2 as a cedar tree? And produce 50 times as much protein as beef for the same amount of water? But could you eat these faces? Maybe yes.
Sixteen green hello kitty figures are hung on a wall. Each is clothed as a different type of algae, with different shaped heads and bodies.

Last night was very hot in Japan, I could not sleep and ended up rewriting my "about" page.

As many decisions in the middle of the night, might be a bad one and I may change it again soon.

Have a peep before I change it back and let me know if I should keep it or not. www.vizcie.com/about

Very inspiring to hear sir Paul Nurse explaining his research and reflect about

- What is Life?

- Why working with yeast has been so important to understand cells also in humans,

- The consequences of natural selection,

- Our responsibility to steward nature.

Congratulations Timon!
This is very inspiring. We learn by doing and teaching, so involving students in the production seems a great idea.
