banning people like antivaxxers and fascists has never been about “censoring the opposition” or “stifling healthy debate.” at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, that’s what they want you to think. it’s always been about limiting the reach of mass disinformation campaigns that seek […]

I'm finally getting to see what battery life is like on the iPhone Air, now that I have cellular. For my usage, I'm looking at 76% by 5:30PM, and 39% by midnight or so when I sleep. 'All day' battery life really is just that, for my usage patterns. Really the only thing that bothers me is […]

It sounded like the marching band at the KU-UCF football game just briefly played the theme to Star Trek (2009) between snaps and even if it’s not true it’s stuck in my head now.

Pro tip, though: if someone is going "show me exactly where he's being racist" after reading DHH's little love letter to Tommy Robinson, they're actually being something called "disingenuous." Look it up. It's a common strategy on the right […]

What would ICEBlock on the Fediverse look like?

one nice thing we have here is that there's no ceo of fediverse, and even if evan prodromou and eugen rochko blocked my annoying arse it wouldn't mean anything to anyone.

The canceling of ICEBlock is more evidence, were any needed, that the Web is the platform of the future, the only platform without a controlling vendor. Anything controversial should be available through a pure browser interface.

The word "democracy" has been poisoned by people who love dictatorship. BIg Journalism poisoned its own well. We need to talk up "local/community news and information" if we want people to care about saving both […]

Obviously, ICEBlock should not have been removed from the app store. Obviously, Apple should not place itself in the position of the “one throat to choke” if their throat is going to be this delicate and choke-able.

but also the author of this app is a dumb grifter who is incredibly cavalier […]

I can only assume that "actually" is some kind of Mastodon codeword given how often people here use it.

Far-leftists are just plain weird. That's in relation to what they said in their quote post of me.

The fact that they believe that crap about Stalin after he made a deal with Hitler to divide up Poland is not weird. That's a sign of serious mental health issues […]

Elon Musk's whining about App Store rankings is a strong signal that Grok is on the rocks https://www.platformer.news/musk-altman-grok-apple-competition-fight/
But I also think there's something telling about the exchange. Earlier this year, I took note of the incident in which Meta gamed benchmarks to try to make Llama 4 look better than it actually was. At the time, the story had not gotten much mainstream attention. In its aftermath, though, Mark Zuckerberg blew up his AI organization and reportedly has spent hundreds of millions of dollars recruiting top researchers in hopes of catching up to the competition.

In Musk's feeble antitrust claim this week, I see a similar adverse indicator: a case in which a giant of technology comes to understand that it has fallen behind, and immediately kicks up a cloud of dust to distract from it.

I don't want my computer to act like a human. There are humans already and they're much better at it.

The whole appeal of a computer is that it's not like a human at all.
