And yes, I know the actual name of the manor is Allerdale Hall. I refer to the entire estate as Crimson Peak for simplicity's sake.

It's old school Gothic horror & absolutely visually stunning. It is a bit disturbing - in a (mostly) good way (TW: incest). It is always on my spooky season watch list. I know it is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. If you don't have a Prime membership, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial.

I hope you all enjoyed this "Crimson Peak" into the costumes of this beautiful Gothic horror flick. This was only a small glimpse, so I would strongly suggest you give the film itself a watch. It may even inspire you to don a flowing white gown & run breathlessly through a haunted manor yourself!

Although there is one ghost who isn't red, his character arc of redemption making him the one spirit who is the traditional ghostly pale color one expects a spectre to be.

Although Edith arrives wearing her bright colors & modern fashions, her outfits become more constraining & darker in color as the story progresses, symbolizing the Sharpe siblings' hold on her.

In this gorgeous golden yellow dress, Edith appears as though she is a ray of brilliant sunshine attempting to break through the gloom of the ancient manor.

While Edith's gown gives us a different message - its pale color conveys light & innocence & its bare shoulders & back exude a sense of freedom & modernity.

But the gown also serves to contrast the 2 female characters & the worlds they inhabit. While beautiful, Lucille's dress is constricting - its tight sleeves & fitted, buttoned to the chin bodice gives the feeling of suffocation. Its blood-red color gives us a hint of what lies ahead in the story.

One of the most striking costumes of the film has to be this stunning red dress worn by Lucille to attend a ball, where she plays the piano. Although its style is of the previous decade, the visual effect is breathtaking.

Edith, the innocent young heroine, is introduced to us wearing the latest in 1890s fashion, befitting a wealthy ingenue. Her ensembles are in lighter, brighter colors such as white, greens & shades of yellow. The walking suit she wears at the beginning of the movie is a replica of this 1895 suit.

The costumes are absolutely stunning works of art & it is easy to see why costume designer, Kate Hawley, was nominated for an Oscar. Her costumes tell a story as well as show the contrast between the characters.
