I don't think it's a Southern thing. The funds are simply tied tightly to the donor's area of interest, so that area prospers. Professorships are especially good for this; they attract the best profs, who attract students & media attention.

I have examples (retired uni staff). Major gifts require binding contracts to protect everyone's interests. Donor promises $ for a particular program, uni pledges to honor terms of the gift. Very difficult to wiggle out; requires court action & negatively affects future fundraising.

Major donors who endow a professorship, name a building, fund large scholarships. Endowment or major gift agreements can be written to bind the institution to keep programs going. Groups of alumni can band together to do this, too, but it takes a lot of coordination.

Just read your tribute to Rob Reiner, and it was the best piece about him I've seen.

I'm so sorry about your dad. Lost my mom in Sept, and the writing was gone. Couldn't focus, started feeling panicky at how stuck I was. My writing buddy emailed, "Tell me about your husband." As I thought about what to tell & began a response, I slowly came unstuck.

Not yours alone, however.

I remember fearing nuclear war in the 70s, but worse was the dread when GWB was elected, followed by 9/11, the Iraq war, Guantanomo, torture memos, Scooter Libby.... and so the answer is no. Times have never felt so dire.

Love Georgia, but I'm also fond of Garamond.

Until they get adjusted, a small band-aid might help, or a blister pad.
