between a better edition of my literal favorite board game and Hot Streak, I'm convinced that CMYK has spent the last while developing and producing games tailored exclusively to my sensibilities

If you told me a few years ago that I'd have an opportunity to review a new edition of Magical Athlete, I'd have called you a liar.

If you followed up by telling me it was from @cmyk.games and was perfect in every discernible way, I'd have asked who put you up to this.

an achievement from The Hundred Line for celebrating day 69

69% of players have this achievement

technically 69.1% but come on

also I don't know if I can heap enough praise on the localizers for taking on this massive, daunting project so successfully

there are a lot of westernizations, turns of phrase, references, etc. and they work way more often than they don't. I'm impressed!

70-something days in and it's so glaringly obvious that we have a traitor that is making barely any effort to hide it. they're just scheming in broad daylight, machinations naked for all to see, blatant mackies

it kinda sucks but my hope is that it's an intentional lead-in to the mega route split
vysetron.pixeldie.com
good catch! my mistake

the party has been expanded and we are still working with a 1 real character : 2 one-note goobers ratio

I don't...hate them all? there's one in particular (the one with the mask) who's intolerably shit, but that's obviously on purpose and I suspect they'll change their tune a bit
vysetron.pixeldie.com
by all means give me an excuse to become an internet hermit who only emerges to post a fully formed idea then vanish into the mountains

not necessarily saying I want this to happen but it would be extremely funny if Bluesky also died from the exact same preventable choices that killed Twitter, only this time it's a woman doing it

it's like poetry, it rhymes

there are vanishingly few SRPGs that manage to balance risk/reward, and far fewer that can turn dying units into anything more than at best support pieces or at worst liabilities

THL says "oh that unit's about to die? finish the job yourself and we'll shower you with goodies"

that's *so cool*
vysetron.pixeldie.com
20 days into THL, midly grumpy

I know I'm still being onboarded but it's very much doing the 1/3 real characters 2/3 gimmick one-noters thing, only now it's less likely that one of the latter will be found dead and kick off an arc

am a big fan of the battle system and mechanical design though!

1: everything you just said

2: there is no such thing as objectivity, no codified Good Design principles or Bad Mechanisms

3: you must put a treat behind the waterfall

Ebert was a brilliant critic with a focus on the mediums he was versed in. his arguments largely make sense from his lens, and he was never going to have the time or interest to disprove his impression

if all you want to to have your own preferences externally validated you will never be fulfilled
vysetron.pixeldie.com
it's weird to find games in all their forms to be art, exist in those circles, and also be an open admirer of Roger Ebert

a lot of game-enjoyers like to shadow box with a dead guy, as if they could convince him to see the light if he only played Danganronpa or something

he didn't even hate games!
vysetron.pixeldie.com
"hill" was actually originally a mistranslation, that's why none of the games in the series feature a hill

as an owner of a lightly used X myself, I'm legit considering selling it (at a profit now???) and just washing my hands of this whole situation

I've long considered un-hanging-up my EIC badge and starting an independent website that's basically a collective of writers who can contribute whatever, whenever, bc I trust them to make good shit

problem usually comes back to time spent/money, and ain't no way that shit'd be profitable
vysetron.pixeldie.com
I make a point of not using suggested feeds whenever possible, just finding good writing and following those folks has served me well so far

but I've taken a look a few times after seeing people talk about how bad it is and jesus christ, it must make a horrendous first impression

MS have demonstrated that functionally infinite resources can only take you so far without direction, you cannot win in this industry through sheer attrition, better brands have tried

instead we have pockets of salted earth in their wake and a burning green logo

how embarrassing
vysetron.pixeldie.com
they bought a bunch of studios and left most of them under-supported, under-marketed (bc game pass lmao), under-funded up to and including axing them, and gradually enshittifying all of their core offerings while daring to charge their increasingly tired userbase *more*

the last several years have been a long series of business moves so staggeringly expensive and strategically poor that a lot of us just kind of assumed they knew something we didn't

but no! this is it! this is the end of the road, and what do we have to show for it?
vysetron.pixeldie.com
using this as a springboard

MS made an attempt at a unified, walled-garden ecosystem while wildly underestimating the time and runway it takes to capture a critical mass of users (most of whom are very comfortable where they are)

This, a second price hike on console hardware that's almost a full generation old, barely any first party releases, not being sold at Costcos... Man just pull the plug already. They're done.
