I remember Fox News going after him really hard after 9/11 for writing a song with a 1st person POV of the American who joined the taliban. They tried to give him the Dixie Chicks treatment. But I guess that’s probably long forgotten.

I think the characters treat R2D2 like he has a soul and C-3PO like he does not. And if I had to deal with those two I might do the same.

YUP. And full disclosure, I think both can be funny, and I look forward to making both kinds of jokes the day after we solve racism for good and no longer have to worry about what we say having consequences

The movies are extremely not interested in asking those questions, but I remember seeing the 90s rerelease of Empire in the theater with my dad, not a Star Wars fan, and his review afterwards was “the little robot was the most human character, he got excited, he got sad…”

Like someone posted a complaint about the word to Reddit and this was one of the top replies. Any joke about tech and sci fi tropes is fully out the window here, this is nothing but reveling in being a shithead and (they assume) getting away with it.

The first time I saw it, it was clearly meant as a joke. Didn’t see a problem then. But jokes get less funny the more times you tell it. So the people who are insisting on saying it over and over, and finding groups to cheer each other on when they say it… yeah something is up there.

They started finding ways to use it on people or in other ways really fast

Not in the least bit kidding, that headline's been pissing me off for a week.
On a background of someone holding Amazon branded packages, a headline: "Prime Day Is Back. And even if you don't need more stuff, these deals are hard to skip."

If I died I know what she would do, she would eat small bits of plastic bags until she threw up and then she would do it again

It’s hard enough convincing my cat to eat cat food, she only wants to eat yogurt and plastic bags

Malala Yousefzi's mentioned on social media are full of Gen Z people who are shocked she's alive and were convinced she was a Civil-Rights era historical figure

Surprised Seinfeld never did an episode where they kept saying the word renounce. “I’m doing it, I’m gonna renounce!” “I can’t call her now, she didn’t renounce. She refused to renounce!” “I renounce your renouncement. I double renounce!” And so on

Yeah, I guess not the first American but the first person who isn’t part of British comedy

Jason Mantzoukas was perfect for the only American to be on the show. Our greatest ambassador.

i think the song "rosalind is a fucking nightmare but she jumps quite far for a woman of her age" on the season 5 finale of taskmaster is among the funniest things i've ever seen
wafflecut.bsky.social
I think that sounds right to me

It’s also crazy when people crossover what feel like massive cultural shifts. Duke Ellington put out his first records in 1924 and was still doing great stuff in the 70s when he died. In movie terms he went from Buster Keaton to Godfather II.

Groucho was an excellent celebrity in his old man period, he seemed like he was always happy to show up to a thing and tell some jokes. This is him and Queen.

By the time Charlie Parker was 30 he had a jazz nightclub in manhattan named after him and by the time he was 35 he had been banned from the club
