Historian, Archivist, Photographer. Will happily chat about most things but especially about maritime history, swordfighting, folklore, D&D, and dusty boxes full of old stuff. I’m also a tired human who is going to grad school...again. She/Her 🏳️‍🌈

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

This is why I don’t often attend church. The phrase doesn’t bother me-I like being able to question things (thanks super conservative upbringing) but the “you must belong” to come here thing is what gets me. I want faith, not a group that immediately thinks we’re besties because of the Lord’s Prayer

I want to be included, not the newest item up for show and tell. The aggressive evangelism of “oooh new person! Come & be involved in everything! And I want your personal contact info so you can stay in the loop” is too much out of the gate. It’s about building trust. I’m basically a wounded stray.

I feel like there is a fine line. Like I want to see specifically that LGBTQ+ are welcome, I want to know how to navigate a service, and I’m fine with a polite hello or gentle invitation to come back but if people call attention to the fact that I’m new or are in my face, I probably won’t be back.

Same. If someone comes up to me & tries to find out my life story or tries to get me to go to something more, I will nope out immediately. I want to know how to inconspicuously participate from the back of the church & want no one to pay attention to me until I make the first move.

Anyone who isn’t regularly attending a church but is interested, was likely made to feel unwelcome somewhere else. By not helping them to feel comfortable, or assuming that they’ll figure it out, they are basically being told that they’re not welcome here either until they prove themselves.

I occasionally attend church and I look at bulletins if they’re posted online before going. If they can’t bother to put “please stand” or “please sit,” I assume they prioritize a “you might not be one of us” ethos over making visitors feel welcome. And then I don’t go there. It makes a difference.

Trying this now, since nothing else seems to stop the horrors.

we have a rule at our house that if it is past 9pm and you are having feelings, the only thing you are allowed to do is have a snack and go to bed, so anyway, I will be having a snack and going to bed!!

The number of parents who gasped when we told them no, we could not tell them what their kids checked out because their kids have a right to privacy!

We offered “one book cards” to kids whose parents wouldn’t agree to let them have a card. They could take out a book at a time. The FURY.

My feelings about Banned Books Week are that no indeedy parents do NOT have the right to decide what their own children read, because children are human beings with the right to dignity and privacy.

Agreeing w the parents rights premise shifts the Overton window in the wrong ass direction.

Lovely examples of how BUTTONS used to be made from the nacreous layer of these bivalves! Just take "hole punches" through the shells! #molluscmonday

I know it’s how the algorithms work, but for the love of the gods all I wanted to do was click on one Christmasy thing to see the details better. I really don’t need everything in my social media feeds to look like a Hallmark movie threw up!

Wow. Today I learned that Brits and Americans have VERY different ideas of what a flapjack is…

One of my very favorite things about Central Texas! I love the weird, malfunctioning robot sound they make. I love that they strut through my yard like a little goth gang. I love the way they call in the parking lots at dusk. They are the best!

Sad to see you go, but taking breaks from all this is a very good practice. Hope you stay well and find balance.

I’ve built an ongoing player discord with PC and NPC profiles, session notes, maps, game dynamics, Ask the GM, and player chat. It’s been super helpful and well received!

Oh the world of teeny books! I love them so!!

I need to figure out how I can wear them in a punk style that doesn’t end up looking like a chained wallet. And figure out how to make punk work for work attire. It’s a process.

I would like to bring back chatelaines as everyday fashion items, please. I think life would be better if we could carry our little treasures around with us like magpies. “Here is my antique penknife. This is my emotional support acorn. And that’s my special super shiny rock. Her name is Elizabeth.”
Pewter chatelaine designed by VictoriaGriffinsong (on Etsy) featuring an engraved dagger and 5 silver chains. Photographed agains red damask fabric with a small silver sewing scissors in the upper left, a spool of red thread in the upper right, and a small silver thimble in the middle right.

I’m loving the nostalgic wander down the riot grrrl road. I was as punk as rural Midwest America allowed, so it’s been a fun project. I’m positioning punk zines as an informational access point to social subcultures and shared community values. It’s been a night of really interesting reading.

Currently reacting to the state of the world by writing a paper on punk zines, Riot Grrrls, and body-positive feminism for a grad class. Pretty sure this isn't what my prof was looking for, but hey, that's what you get when you don't define what you mean by "write about information access."
Image of the cover of Issue #2 of Bikini Kill zine, entitled Girl Power. Features a black and white photocopied image of a topless women holding a bouquet of flowers (which covers her chest). The text "Bikini Kill" in bold black sans-serif font runs vertically along the left side. The text "Girl Power" in serif, typewriter font runs horizontally along the bottom.

I basically assume everyone is a no go unless we’ve actively discussed fandom. And even then, they have to bring it up first. Otherwise, I’ve never heard of anything at all ever.
