Survivors aren't obligated to care-take for offenders & it's perverse of families to even ask them to, regardless of when abuse was perpetrated or if the abuser is sorry.

Particularly if you're expected to show up for abusers & enablers.
Some of us complete our grieving before the offender dies.
People will always talk; they talk about you (not to you) because they're cowards.

Instead of telling people to "feel grateful it wasn't worse," (and insist they embrace denial) simply support their genuine feelings & honesty.
