Interesting, this male Monarch butterfly is resting/warming on patio umbrella I’ve placed to give a respite from the sun to some seedling Penstemon spectabilis plants. Have only seen one there when we placed a newly emerged butterfly on it to finish drying its wings. Did one remember and return? 🌿🦋
An orange, black, and white monarch butterfly is resting in the sun on a light tan colored patio umbrella in a backyard. Its wings are closed and we see the left side of the butterfly.

It’s great when birds have very recognizable call and they alert their presence! Bummer no phone

Our aquarium biologist, René, shares a unique bond with the amazing animals in his care. Delve into one of our most-viewed YouTube videos to learn how René engages with our giant Pacific octopus using target training and other unconventional enrichments like a sea-cret morning salsa music routine! 💃🏻

That IS an early start, well deserved ramble - even if the moon kept slipping farther away.

This Whippy came by a few minutes later, it’s about twice the size though not full grown yet. Maybe 6-7 inches. Western whiptail lizard
A brown lizard with gray spots that almost form stripes is slowly moving across a concrete patio in the shade so colors are muted. Its long tail is forming a straight line with its body. The lizard is facing the lower left corner of the photo.

Lovely shot.

Nice! I’ve seen one or two houses in our 23 year old neighborhood have roof work 😬

I’ve not seen an inflight pick, the Mourning doves are so fast once in the air. I have seen feather explosions but seemed to be fright molts or very close calls.

You’re welcome ☺️

Fortunately the three iterations of Gary (Gary, Jr, GaryAnne) don’t have much luck here, trees and fence affording some interference, I don’t think I could chase them off 🤷‍♂️ or stop feeding the little ones.

Last night’s moon rise, one day after the Full moon. Crater detail is beginning to show along the right edge as the moon enters the waning gibbous phase. The Tycho impact crater is looking down on us 👁️
The dark basaltic flows (lunar maria) are showing nicely. #skysky
A view of the moon one day after the full moon. A slight shadow appears on the right edge and so some craters can be seen on that edge. The Tycho crater with light colored impact rays can be seen towards the lower right of our view.

Great catch! She’ll figure it out, much to the chagrin of the little birds…

Is patreon still the go to for that sort of thing even with the not so welcome changes over the years? Does anyone replicate the success people can have there on their ko-fi or other platforms? Seems a really odd, opaque landscape these days.

Lots of birds chomping on fruit around. I think this cardinal has a pokeberry.

Thank goodness for late blooming flowers. Both for fueling the pollinators and because they make me smile
