i like the nasty irony of giving an 'Eastern' name to what's something like a Western story, about the original sin behind the birth of the USA and the old west. to me the story/ending never feels like a joke at anyone's expense...

i've been pestering friends to read CADILLAC DESERT--incredible, furious book about water in USA west. he gives a capsule account of the real mulholland's work in california; it's horrifying in a way his character in the film isn't. feels almost like C'TOWN's ending figures *that* blood-inheritance

i love how thomson writes about movies. i don't know (and can't be bothered to look up) what the original ending was, which he alludes to earlier in his Chinatown section. the filmed ending makes me feel the way polanski's stuff does, like a miscarriage at a dinner party
