@realgdt.bsky.social FRANKENSTEIN is the most artistically exciting take on the subject since James Whale. As a film, it's sumptuous & deliberate. As an adaptation, it's surprising & challenging. Troubling + stirring for the inner Romantic. Eye protein indeed.

I am shocked - shocked! - that people who chose the name "Palantir" unironically don't get this.
The thing that always gets me is that Tolkien obviously would have hated Silicon Valley generally, and these particular guys specifically.

The Third Reich didn't last 1,000 years.

Pinochet was ousted with a referendum.

And the US isn't exactly dealing with the smartest, most competent fascists.

Those of you insisting that 2025 is forever need to read a book, touch grass, go to therapy, anything other than trying to make others quit.

There are things happening in the U.S. that are far above and beyond what is normal.

This impacts every single person working in animation, every single artist & every citizen.

If you are an American, pay attention, because we are entering a VERY DANGEROUS moment in history.

Possible to start to tell a unified story: "Trump is personally too old, crazy, and confused to run things, so at any given time the question is which co-president is in charge. At first it was Musk, & we got the crazy chaotic DOGE era. Then Navarro: a trade war that crashed markets. Now Miller..."

It deserves points for ambition, music, design, and some of its characters, but WING (admittedly my only exposure to the GUNDAM world) is Exhibit A for a series with a reach that exceeds its grasp.
listen i understand the affection for gundam wing but i rewatched it last year and it is not good

i really, really need people to understand that they *didn't* vote for this, no matter how much you insist they did. insisting "they voted for this" elides the information environment that led them to vote the way they did in the first place, the thing that actually needs fixing.

It wouldn't be so bad if I could have his volume too:

Everyone else has hailed David Lynch's other achievements, but I'll add this: however uneven his DUNE is as an adaptation (and however much it pained him), it was far more successful at creating a sense of a multicultural universe with a deep history, and he provided better eye protein:
How 'Dune' Shows the Limits to the Minimal Style Of Denis Villeneuve’s Sci-Fi
He's a stunning visualist, but is Denis Villeneuve really bringing worlds like "Dune" to life?

If classics have to be remade, better that each version have a distinct identity.

Original NOSFERATU: Expressionist, lyrical horror

Herzog NOSFERATU: Meditative, transitional horror

Eggers NOSFERATU: Sometimes heavy and ponderous, sometimes aggressive horror.

I believe that anyone who says making music is not enjoyable hasn’t created music, or has been unfortunate to have had a bad experience, a bad teacher, etc.

Creating things like art or music is not a chore. We sweep floors to make them clean, but we make things to make things.

To take off a bit from the linked article - when it comes to movies, fantasy, sci-fi, and pretty much all speculative/genre fiction benefit from scarcity. Part of the power behind old Godzilla/Harryhausen films or METROPOLIS epics is that there were so few of them, b/c they were so hard to do well.

With those color choices, I thought for a second this was some crossover with Gandalf leading the Night's Watch.
On 18 December in Middle-earth: the Fellowship of the Ring is formed. Pippin was the last member to be agreed with Gandalf saying, "trust rather to their friendship than to great wisdom". The Fellowship set out a week later.

Spent most of the year with the itch to re-watch the best PETER PAN movie, and last week, I finally did (I forgot it was set at Christmas, but whatever excuse to get it on a streaming platform I can watch, I'll take).
