Sweetest boy 812. He hasn't been seen since 2021 but he was a young adult, and it's very possible he followed some sow in estrus to another river with less competition than crowded Brooks. He's 11 now (assuming he's still alive), so I hope he's coming into his own at another river somewhere. #katmai

Two evenly-matched males spent the afternoon lazily sparring while waiting for the bay to freeze. #BearSeason2025 #Mammals 🌿
Two male polar bears lie on the snowy ground facing each other and lazily mouth at each other's head. The bears are up on all fours now with one draping himself over the back of the other who chomps on the loose fur around his opponent's neck. Tundra Bear

Earlier this year I drove the Dempster Highway up to Tuktoyaktuk on the coast of the Arctic Ocean. I encountered this beautiful grizzly on the autumn tundra, just north of the Arctic circle. Easily one of my favourite pics from the trip.

An incredible moment on the Coastal Road this afternoon. Many people got to witness this bear roaming the rocks. However, it was getting too close to town and it was important we back off and let it be. Polar bear alert would eventually have to encourage it to move on.

There was a recent sighting of the rare Himalayan brown bears~a mom and her cubbie. These elusive bears are native to the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas and known for their shy nature. They are difficult to see in the wild and are endangered due to habitat loss and human-wildlife conflicts.🐻

My photo shows a fragment of a Roman floor mosaic depicting a brown bear standing on its hind legs with its front legs raised/ leaning on the upper trunk of a tree laden with round fruit, perhaps apples, which are a favourite of brown bears! The bear raises its head, mouth wide, as if about to eat a fruit from the tree. The bear’s outline is defined with black tessarae, and its fur is composed of dark and light brown tessarae. The fruit tree is covered with round orangy-red fruits amongst green and grey leaves. The trunk is coloured with olive and light brown tesserae. The background is made of off-white tesserae. This natural scene is supplemented by a small geyish green shrub between the tree and the bear, and in the background, a second tree without fruit. This mosaic fragment was found in 1875 at Südallee, Trier. Dated 3rd century AD. It has been partially restored.

This one looks like a brown bear. The other type are smaller moon bears, which live in Central and Southern Japan - the kind of buggers that annoy people out for a Sunday stroll in the mountains near Tokyo
