I guess I should introduce myself: Salut! I'm Alanna, or Lansi. WHOA (lansi) cuz I can be a little intense; I'm not for everyone, & that's ok.

I'm an accidental urbanist - we traded our second vehicle for a cargo bike in October 2023. I now do all my running around #YYC by bike, & I love it.

Our first two rides were in North quadrants. This one will be in the SW. Stay tuned for more route details!

That's how I feel about Lindsay Park (MNP). Grew up swimming there every day and it'll always be Lindsay Park! For the Y, it helps that the logo is in the bricks, so it's not going anywhere, but I think we're really missing an affordable family option now.

What an unforgettable afternoon with
#BensonBoone on the
#BikeBus!
The energy, the smiles, and the singing made it a ride we'll never forget.

Also a hit with the girls! (I have to admit, still sour about the closure of that downtown Y. We could be riding to swimming lessons & playing in this park afterwards.)

I had a similar interaction with a car on the 24th Ave cycle track yesterday, while Anni was in the box. I gotta ride with the cam more often.

Strike #BikeBus ft full moon, two Urban Arrows, two frog bikes, & two kids who really like riding together. #yycbike (Annika wanted to wait for Teddy today so they could ride together ❤️)

I seriously thought they were going to hit you there! Be careful, friend!

I think people don't realize we're at 1.6 million because you can't leave your house in this city without bumping into someone you know. Seriously, Calgary is the biggest small town ever.

When that Blue Zone doc came out, all I heard was the diet piece. This video dives into other (arguably more) important pieces of the puzzle. (I will also admit that I am incredibly biased in this conversation & really want better options for myself & my community as we age.)
whoalansi.bsky.social
The thing that has always struck me the most when people talk about aging is that there's so much talk about diet. & I think that what we put in our bodies is pretty important, it's not the whole picture.

Finally got around to finishing watching this video put out last year from the @cnunewurbanism.bsky.social about Walkability for a Restorative Urbanism. Some really interesting conversations, including some things that I think are interesting to consider about community, aging, & parenting.

Nice! That is definitely awesome. Our afterschool program is thankfully fantastic & organizes lots of great things, otherwise, I'd probably be doing the same.

You can be the safest, most attentive driver in the world and still pose a massive risk to other road users. That’s because cars and car dependency are inherently dangerous.

This doesn’t mean you’re a bad person if you drive, but I do think that drivers should acknowledge their role in this system.

All of us just dreaming about how awesome that job sounds. I talk about how great my cargo bike is & all the things I can use it for FOR FREE. I'm doing something wrong. lol

Thanks!

Very true. & I know we're super lucky to have childcare at all during the strike. I heard the libraries were full of kids yesterday & it's just day 1. Still...hard for everyone with kids who are supposed to be in school rn. (Still very much support the teachers though!)

Yeah, I think I'll probably be able to find something without transportation, which isn't ideal. I did that for Anni last year for 6 months & it was so disruptive.

For the fall. We just unexpectedly found out that our daycare is no longer doing kinder & the afterschool program that Anni is in hasn't been able to find space for a kindergarten afterschool program. We aren't on any waitlists cuz our backup was daycare so...it's not looking good.

Went for a rage run yesterday when they announced the lockout. Luckily, we got an email that childcare will continue to operate in schools (just ATA members are locked out. Fewf!). Now just have to deal with finding a childcare option for my younger girl now that our OG plan fell through.

Good morning, #yycbike ! Off to spend the day at our lovely afterschool program which we'll hopefully continue to operate during the lockout cuz I really don't need any more stress in my life.

"Make no mistake about it, though, something’s in the air when those kinds of numbers turn up to support a rally like this one. In addition to union solidarity, this is evidence of real popular opposition to the UCP ..."

I love continuous sidewalks! They're such a great design feature to slow cars down & make it safer for pedestrians in ways a sign just doesn't do the same. Happy to see them in newer plans from @calgary.ca. They're a great tool for hitting those #visionzero goals.

Further up the same Stockholm street from the clip below is another traffic-calming device: intersections where cars may cross but the design is a sidewalk with low curb. Drivers tend to inch across, some of them likely not sure if they're really supposed to be there.

I think if your kid is riding at these ages, you are aware of this. Our 4 y/o bounces off the ground on a pretty regular basis. Just this weekend, we rode to family photos & she rode straight into a square curb & crashed. It's unusual that she's very upset by it (this time she was, of course).
