Protecting one of Europe's largest natural landscapes.

The project is part of Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme, funded by Arcadia, coordinated by Frankfurt Zoological Society.

#CameraTraps are an excellent tool for #biodiversity #monitoring in #WildPolesia.
>70 scientists & rangers took part in the training sessions on CTs held by our project this year in #Ukrainian PAs. They've been provided with 150 cameratraps for their further research and #conservation work.

Different lynxes or the same one? Camera traps for lynx are set in pairs opposite each other to shoot the animal from both sides. Then, experts examine the unique spots on the lynx's skin, which are like fingerprints! If the same lynx is "caught" by the CTs several times, it will surely be noticed.

#Wetlands and #peatlands of #WildPolesia make an immense impact on #climatechange mitigation. But being degraded, they can only worsen the existing problems. Rewetting and restoring mires is our #ClimateAction.

The future of these rare birds largely depends on human activity — sustainable mowing and shrub removal are necessary to keep fens suitable for the #AquaticWarbler and increase their habitats.

The #AquaticWarbler is the rarest #migratory songbird in #Europe. Due to the massive fens’ drainage, its population has decreased by 95% over the last century. Currently, over 40% of the species’ global population nests in #WildPolesia.

Just look! The #GreaterSpottedEagles are on their annual journey from #WildPolesia to their wintering grounds, thousands of miles away. Where are they flying, and who is
the fastest? Follow the rare birds' #autumnmigration online via the interactive map: wildpolesia.org/greater-spot....

Let’s celebrate a true treasure of #WildPolesia, life-giving arteries for both nature and people – the free-flowing #rivers that
provide habitat to a variety of species;
help to mitigate the climate change;
prevent dangerous natural phenomena.

The globally endangered #GreaterSpottedEagle is a key #species for our project. #DYK that it can have a rare pale morph, and only a few of such birds have been recorded in #Europe? One of them, a female of >12 years old, has been breeding in #WildPolesia for several years in a row.

#Bats choose dead & dying #trees for resting and breeding. Preserving these habitats is vital for the #endangeredspecies like the #CommonBarbastelle. #biodiversity #NatureConservation #RareSpecies

The rare European #StagBeetle, one of the biggest beetles in the world, occurs in #WildPolesia. Its larvae develop for several years feeding on dead wood. #biodiversity #NatureConservation #RareSpecies

The preservation of dead trees is critical for the White-backed #woodpecker. The bird feeds on insects and their larvae extracted from under the bark of old and dead trees. A complete ban on cutting trees in its habitat is imposed. #biodiversity #NatureConservation #RareSpecies

The old-growth #forests of #WildPolesia, with a large number of old & dead trees, are home to many rare and protected #species. We identify these #habitats and protect them to preserve them in their natural state, which is crucial for the region's #biodiversity.

#Floodplain #OakGroves are a #landmark of #WildPolesia. They perform water protection & water regulation functions, and are home to diverse & rare flora and fauna #species.
Growing anthropogenic pressure leads to degradation & disappearance of these valuable natural complexes.

Unlike in many parts of #Europe, #wolves have never completely disappeared from #WildPolesia despite habitats' fragmentation and unrestricted hunting.

We are studying the local #wolf population to improve the #conservation of this charismatic species.

As part of our project, 6 training sessions on the SMART system were held for staff of 7 protected areas in the Ukrainian Polesia.
>70 scientists & rangers mastered a new mobile tool for #biodiversity monitoring & data organisation. They also got necessary devices & software.

Just look at those graceful legs! With sharp #hooves, they are the #moose's deadly weapon. In open terrain, this #ungulate, typical for #WildPolesia, can easily fend off even large #predators.

#Summer is the busiest time of year for specialists conducting #FieldResearch in #WildPolesia. They endure many hardships & inconveniences in their quest to discover new information about the region's #wildlife. We wish them perseverance & good luck this season!

The #PygmyOwl is the world's smallest 🦉
Being primarily a boreal or mountain species, it can also be found in #WildPolesia.
Very strict #conservation measures are in place in the protected habitats of these birds. This benefits other #species & natural systems in these areas.

Check out this rare image - a #lynx captured by a #cameratrap. But what's so special about it, you might ask? During a large-scale CT survey in #WildPolesia, we received >50K #photos from 100 CTs, but only a few of them show a lynx in daylight.

This summer we organized training sessions on SMART system for protected areas’ staff of the Ukrainian Polesia. SMART is an effective mobile tool for #biodiversity monitoring & data organisation. The specialists were provided with #cameratraps & smartphones with special software.

Due to the large-scale drainage reclamation, #WildPolesia now suffers from #SoilErosion & #DustStorms. Many drained #peatlands are no longer fertile & have been abandoned. #WetlandRestoration can bring life back to these areas & provide vital #EcosystemServices.

The #EuropeanPondTurtle is the only turtle #species in #WildPolesia. Once common in the region, it declined in numbers after the large-scale drainage reclamation of the 20th century.
The preservation & restoration of #wetland #habitats are vital for these animals.

#WildPolesia is home to many rare and #endangeredspecies.
Protecting the region's immense #biodiversity is one of our key tasks. As part of our project, we identify the habitats of rare species of #flora and #fauna in order to put them under legal protection.
