The answer as to “why” is basically: the Metro was built in the 80’s, intended to connect with an unbuilt N/S metro line underground at Charles Cntr.
In the 90’s, they built a surface light rail line w/o federal funding, and took the easiest path through downtown, which happened to be Howard St

I just swung by there this afternoon. It would seem to me that’s there plenty of room for a fence while keeping the sidewalk on Lombard open, but they decided to use the streetlights to help hold everything up

I still think it would be a good idea to redirect the truncated purple circulator to the Greyhound Station. If the city couldn’t manage to have the intercity rail and intercity bus station at the same location, there should at least be a frequent one-seat ride

Was pleasantly surprised by transit in Colorado.
Vacation =\=real life, but between the airport train, downtown Denver’s generous bus lane widths, the Bustang’s 3-pronged power outlets, and Eagle County transit’s shelters - all exceeded expectations.
(Vail is cosplaying as Europe so I expect it)
