Election sermons were common in America since the 17th century, but in New England at least they mostly emphasized good government as opposed to candidate advocacy. But they were partisan (favoring Federalist ideology).

Was poking through some archival newspapers and found this from 1795. A regiment of Philadelphia's militia met to honor their colonel. They concluded with 15 toasts. These were the last two of them. #history #americanhistory #rights
