The last time I saw this many people acting against self-interest it was the same crowd shout to keep stores and schools open during a pandemic, no matter what happened to the old people or kids.

I’m a nervous they’re actually building more muscle memory for acting contrary to their own interest

The combination of being on the downslope of an economic cycle, being in a tech bubble dominated by one tech whose marketing has far outstripped its substantive capacity, and having a gov’t full of people who are hitting the accelerator to drive downhill is not something we’ve seen in our lifetimes

So this is funny.
The administration just issued a rule slashing foreign agricultural worker wages. And to justify it, in a public filing, Trump's Labor Department alleges that Trump's immigration enforcement has devastated the Ag workforce and caused a "risk of supply shock-induced food shortages."

hello please allow me to once again praise our lord and savior social graph distance sentiment analysis (in other words: the sentiment analysis alone is not always enough, but setting different thresholds for it based on how far away the person is from you can be a 10x multiplier)

D.C. MARRIAGES, SAVED! The D.C. Council just passed an emergency bill to let the city to issue marriage licenses. Because of the federal shutdown, D.C. Superior Court's Marriage Bureau has been unable to process marriage licenses since last week. (The court is federally funded.)

Back pay for furloughs used to be a question. It certainly caused me stress when I was furloughed in 2013.

That changed in 2019 with the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act, which unambiguously guarantees back pay.

It passed the House 411-7. Mike Johnson voted for it. Donald Trump signed it.

Johnson: "It's true that in previous shutdowns, many or most furloughed employees have been paid for the time they were furloughed, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary"
