Kerry O’Brien sounds the alarm for Australian media in thunderous Walkleys address | Weekly Beast
Former 7.30 host takes Labor government to task for record on press freedom and pays tribute to Palestinian journalists. Plus: a roo in the news * Want to get this in your inbox every Friday? Sign up for the Weekly Beast media newsletter here The former ABC broadcaster Kerry O’Brien got a standing ovation at the 70th Walkley awards on Thursday night for a rousing speech that reminded media in the ICC Sydney ballroom of the “clear and present danger for a strong, free, effective and independent media everywhere”. Got handed a Metro Tunnel pamphlet as I entered my station this morning, for the new tunnel opening this Sunday in Melbourne.

It was interesting to see the indicative travel times through the tunnel on the big switch goes live (Feb 1st).

Australia’s safety ratings are about to change in a big way.

From 2026, ANCAP will overhaul how new cars are tested and scored - moving beyond traditional crash tests to a full “before, during and after” safety model called Stages of Safety.

I did a #Railnatter episode today!

In honour of the impending opening of MetroTunnel, it's basically a beginner's guide to Melbourne's trains and trams in video format

A bit of brain-off stuff (that's my style).
Thanks, @garethdennis.uk for the opportunity!

The word 'Orwellian' is overused, but calling countries with active human rights protections 'human rights violators' is pure doublespeak.
Countries that have abortion access, DEI policies or protection for LGBTQ+ people will be considered “human rights violators“ by the Trump regime

England quick Mark Wood wanted to drive from Perth to Brisbane after their loss.

"[...] did not realise quite how long the drive would be - roughly 4308 kilometres, and taking 46 hours according to Google Maps, if he was going from Perth Stadium straight to the Gabba."
