Not Joe Mauer, but I enjoy his work. She/her. Baseball fan. Minnesotan AF. Twins STH 1984-2019, more or less. Widow as of 11/12/24 💔 Missing Kevin G. Austin. Non-sports talk: windowseat.bsky.social Elsewhere/email/wishlist: linktr.ee/LaurelKrahn

New pinned post/thread. 🧵

My husband of 19 years @kevingaustin.bsky.social passed away suddenly on 11/11/24; if I seem grumpy or sad or am slow to respond-- that's why! The obituary I wrote for him is below.

I know some of you have the pictures from when the Twins went to Puerto Rico to play a game and dressed up and Joe . . . well. Was iconic. 😂
wintwins.bsky.social
That time Joe Mauer was featured in a "special advertising section" for Puerto Rico in the March 2006 issue of Travel + Leisure magazine. (Link is to BatGirl's coverage and discussion of this.) (Talk of modeling shirts led me to this trip down memory lane.)
wintwins.bsky.social
I swear there was a time period where most of the players were modeling shirts but not Joe but then he got with the program.

OMG Joe is also now Hammermade

Oh, okay, i guess that Brewers - Cubs game is already going (was just gonna turn over and checked the score).

"Former catcher, that means he's smart." - A.J.

Guess they started that in 2015 and it lasted at least a couple of years. (Hell, for all I know they're still doing it.)

Nice weather, free hoodies, strange catalog-esque photos of Twins starters on scoreboard, a ballpark not staffed well enough for a sellout.
wintwins.bsky.social
I may have talked about these being J.C. Penney catalog poses.
wintwins.bsky.social
This one was confusing.
wintweets.bsky.social
LOL Niko is a Hammermade trooper.
wintwins.bsky.social
Remember when the Twins did shirt ads on the scoreboard for Hammermade? Figured I'd share Mitch Garver since he's still playing ball.
wintwins.bsky.social
These shirts they keep advertising talk like a stiff collar is a huge selling point but then mention being "free from uncomfortable long sleeves" and I would think a stiff collar would be more uncomfortable.

Also why must baseball fans be subjected to this same ad for shirts over & over?

It's very funny that the 3 foot 6 ken Rosenthal has the normal adult man voice and the Paul bunyanesque Aaron Judge next to him sounds muppety

They can't get both Rosenthal and Judge in the shot

But not comically taller.
wintweets.bsky.social
Justin Morneau is taller than Ken Rosenthal.

/lunges for the remote so I don't have to listen to ARod & Mr. Ortiz & Jeter at the Big Desk.

I was rooting for the Blue Jays but more baseball will be good too. (Alas, Louie got the loss. Poor Louie.)
wintwins.bsky.social
Judge is comically taller than Rosenthal. Love that for us (and this interview).

Talk of Land of the Lost elsewhere caused me to find this old tweet. #KevinQuotes (We might've been talking about Cody Stashak and how I'd mishear his name.)
wintweets.bsky.social
Me: “Sleestak, is that who’s pitching for us?”

Kevin: “Yes, there’s a sleestak pitching for us now.” [hisses like a sleestak.]

[minutes later]

Me: “A sleestak might pitch better.”

I sometimes think about that time period when they replaced Harold Reynolds with John Smoltz and most of baseball Twitter seemed to think it was an upgrade (I did!) but then things took a turn.
wintwins.bsky.social
Yes i'm gonna just keep doing periodic searches on here on Smoltz though I haven't covered common misspellings on his name.

I would listen to any random fan in the stands over John Smoltz, just give one of them a mic
