Book No 1 of 2025

One Hundred Years of Solitude
By Gabriel Garcia Marquez

(English translation)

Absolutely loved it. Quirky, rambling, confusing but ultimately beautiful.

Someone described the prose as feeling like they were being pulled along by the current of a river. And that's spot on

White men are 30% of the population.

They are also:

- 98% of presidents
- 90% of CEOs
- 90% of billionaires
- 80% of Congress

Forever oppressed.

The truth is rationed and obscured while the women who survived these horrors are dragged back through them yet again. Predators remain protected. Evidence is hoarded, withheld, erased. The truth is being smothered in real time & witnessing it is fucking horrific.

The worst, most dishonest prime minister we’ve ever had, rocks back and forth in his Daily Mail cubbyhole spewing out idiotic bilge to kid himself that he and his disastrous Brexit weren’t an almighty national fuck-up.
A deeply pathetic threat from an abject failure of a man.

It's hard to find the words for how disgusting this is. It completely silences girls' experiences of male violence. It fails to recognise the importance of education for prevention. It ignores the drivers of men's violence. And it's racist.

Oh and for good measure, which party cut police numbers?

This is the funniest post I've read in ages.
Then we have this - I call it The Delirium Desk - where Ms Truss does her opening and closing monologues, 90% of which are devoted to raving against the "bourgeoisie establishment". Against a backdrop which, if it were on a dropdown menu, would be called "Bourgeoisie Establishment Basic". 2/

As a side note, I resent Phillips' assertion that back in the 1970s and 1980s white school kids like me were routinely racist. It is absolute bollocks. We weren't. We knew how fucked up racism was back then as much as we do now.
The "I'm no apologist for Farage, here's some apologism for Farage" column that everyone knew Trevor Phillips would write is a monument to bad faith and whataboutery. It's so tedious and predictable.
Is Nigel Farage racist? There’s a more urgent question

This headline will not be repeated by most other newspapers, neither will it lead the TV news. Our agenda-driven, bad faith media is one of the major reasons why we’re in the fix we’re in and why the government is terrified of taking the steps needed to change things. More fool them.
