We have built a society in which people of different skin tones, religious backgrounds & cultures get along, share power, work alongside each other, procreate with each other, recognise the each other’s humanity and democratic rights. It is a STUNNING ACHIEVEMENT OF WORLD HISTORIC PROPORTIONS.

I know statistics are poorly understood and are misused. But facts matter

Between the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them

If an industry can’t survive unless it is built on and developed upon theft and extractivist practices, then it shouldn’t exist. I’m sure mr clegg would want to be paid for his work, right? So why assume that artists and academics should not?

Carolyn Dewar, McKinsey
A few years ago, I found myself sitting across from Thomas M. Siebel,CEO of C3.ai.

At one point he leaned in and said something I’ve never forgotten: “Technologists will build AI. But it will take philosophers, historians, and ethicists to decide how we use AI.

@himself.bsky.social says it clearly. It is not rocket science. It is solidarity. Time for alums, students, faculty and staff at universities to stand together against Trump's wannabe-authoritarianism. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/08/o...

Heseltine at the Tory conf:

"Fascists of the 30s are back... Trump's language coincides with words here... The immigrant has replaced the Jew as the problem. We must make clear we will never have any part in the populist extremism of Farage... We don't need Trump's mouthpiece anywhere near No. 10.”

A health centre in Uganda once saw 20+ severe pneumonia cases every month. Now? Fewer than 5 mild cases of pneumonia and zero meningitis cases.

The idea that this could be done to a people and *not* be a sin, because that people are not real people, or are lesser than other people, is itself the most grievous sin. If this happened to you, wouldn’t it be wrong?

For the avoidance of doubt, if you have heard that Euan Blair’s company Multiverse has been awarded a govt contract to deliver the digital ID scheme, this is false.

The govt expects the ID scheme to be developed in house, though it is still in early stages and “no decisions” have been made

Agreeing to this would be similar to the deals that so many law firms cut.

The main difference was that the law firms were clearly responding to a threat, whereas this "compact" is cleverly – but misleadingly – framed as an offer.

Don't fall for it.

The linked blog post is a must-read.

Speaking only for myself: any university that signs this "deal" agrees to be taken hostage by the administration.

I thought I'd put the administration's proposed "compact" with universities in context, so I wrote the blog post below.

It's especially for journalists covering this story!

Many details about how the compact itself works and why the administration has retreated to this strategy.

Keeping your head down Does. Not. Work.

Obeying in advance Does. Not. Work.

We need to stand together against authoritarianism. That is the only way.
gregggonsalves.bsky.social
Here's the assignment folks. Write op-eds for your local papers and campus newspapers too. Just. Say. No. This is a classic authoritarian move and risks the future of higher education and science and innovation in the US. Speak out today. No time to lose. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/o...
