Author and filmmaker Justine Bateman on generative AI
"They're trying to convince people they can't do the things they've been doing easily for years - to write emails, to write a presentation. Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies - to write that for you." We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, "that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won't know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can't do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat.
People are already doing this. You won't have to process grief, because you'll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via AI video call every day. One of the ways it's going to destroy humans, long before there's a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people." - author and filmmaker Justine Bateman from a piece by Emine Saner for the Guardian

At every turn, this government tries to hurt my Ali. She is 18 and can't live, can't work, and can't even get the medical care she used to receive.

My daughter is now waiting for a transplant, and new techniques and medications are always becoming available. Cardiac care is amazing. Enjoy your new valve!

I wonder what he gets personally from siding with America and Israel. Or can the soulless never experience anything that isn't transactional?

My apple has a square of light reflecting off it, so there is a window nearby. It's on a table that spins, so the apple wobbles on ots knobbly bottom and the square of light dances. Then it's gone from view because something unrelated has taken its place

Two of my kids have had open heart surgeries so far, and it's amazing how quick recovery can be. The body responds to the new blood flow so fast! All you need is something, rolled up towel, cushion, etc, to hold against your chest while coughing. Coughing is good, but needs applied pressure.

I enjoyed this piece from the Oatmeal on AI art but it got me thinking - I'd love to be able to draw but I can't because I've never studied or practiced. Why not?

My inner monologue never stops. It sprints from the millisecond I wake up until I fall asleep. Everything is detailed, everything has an image, a taste, a sound, a colour, whether or not it should. Until I saw the apple experiment, I had no idea so many people see and hear nothing.

Long-forgotten? No, I was looking at records yesterday, but the public in general don't know much about Thomas Cromwell's Valor Ecclesiasticus, and it would be wonderful to reprint the information.

I fucking knew there was no way people in East Auckland have driver's licences. I only have to drive 200m before ridiculously large cars swerve at me every morning.
Howick - slow lunatics. Botany - fast lunatics. Highbrook - the local testing station

Let's stop pretending New Zealand isn't in bed with the Americans and Israelis

The three achieved more diplomatically than the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Perhaps he should reimburse NZ for funds wasted on his UN trip last month, so those resources cover their return flights. After all, they had their own transport until unlawfully detained by another government.
Peters insists Kiwis detained in Israel 'can find their own way home', taxpayers won't foot flights
The family of the trio detained were in tears asking for the Govt to bring them home.

Not relevant to the Patel skull original comment, but I've never actually seen this clip before, only the meme. The skull scarf is 👌

"The badges on our caps, have you looked at them?
What? No... A bit.
They've got skulls on them.
Have you noticed that our caps
have actually got little pictures of skulls on them?
I... I don’t, er...
Hans...
Are we the baddies?"

The transplant found a heart donor for Ali, but as Ali was being told to prep for surgery, the heart suddenly flatlined after passing all the checks for transplant and could not be revived. We came so, so close.

I would leave New Zealand if I could, but I'm stuck here, consigned to watching my daughter slowly die, whole her siblings just tread water, unable to try new things while they watch their youngest sibling suffer.
Life is just heartless roadblocks permanently in the way.

Funny how we are South Auvkland when something bad happens but East Auckland when we are part of Luxon's electorate. We are an area that has changed suburb name five times since I moved here and we still aren't any closer to Flat Bush

A cop has been shot at the social housing complex two minutes from where I live. Helicopter has been circling us for about an hour. I only wanted to go outside to mow the front lawn, but I guess not.

Once you are in a wheelchair, you get written off. My youngest is in a wheelchair now, and in this day and age, it shouldn't be something to stare at, never mind living a typical life
