(as an aboriginal australian whose grandparents were stolen generations, I have a pointed view on whiteness existing as an exterminatory absence of culture or connection. colonialism indeed requires this to profile the national character & we see it brought to its extreme conclusions in fascism)

if you're interested in seeing this discussion in interplay, I usually recommend "Islam is a Blackfella Religion, Whatchya Trying to Prove?" by O. Alam, as while it remains in conversation with many denser texts, it remains accessible for laymen & people otherwise newly encountering it.

there is a stream of academia (& by extension sociocultural political organisation) that conceptualises racism as a formation that occurs primarily through cultural markers over visible biological markers, but it's less prominent in america for reasons that are imho ignorant &/or/if not deliberate.

I'll agree that a lot of the most accessible translations don't strike a balance well, but I do think it's a shame. the classics are all very opinionated in their ways; political. but I do also appreciate that it's a staggering endeavour to discuss at lengths on top of translating, lmao

it is also relevant (though admittedly less so in the historical rpf) that the naming + titling conventions are deliberate for more than floridity: they're often communicating something about the character, context, or serve to deliver metacommentary from the author.

A huge group of people are in a giant hole in the middle of a rolling field. There is a large sign with an arrow pointing to the hole that says "HOLE." Suddenly the group's attention turns to a new hole, complete with a giant sign with an arrow pointing to it that says "NEW HOLE." One person points to the new hole and says "hey look! Someone made a new hole!" The mass clamours out of the old hole and makes a bee-line toward the new hole. It's chaos. One person, now situated in the new hole says "this feels like how the old hole used to feel." Another person nods in agreement.
