After a dry night for the Northland, we will see a chance for isolated snow showers Thursday afternoon. Winds will become very light as temperatures remain cool with highs back in the teens.

The back to back clipper systems event is complete. We are finally enjoying some sunshine.

Temperatures are still cool, and they are going to stay that way the next few days.
The satellite and radar over the Northland at 1:35 p.m. on December 10, 2025, shows breaks in the cloud cover over the Arrowhead, Boundary Waters, Twin Ports, and I-35 Corridor regions. Some possible flurries may be falling in the Iron Range and the I-35 Corridor regions, but overall it is a dry day. Temperatures in the Northland just after 1 p.m. on December 10, 2025, range from 12 to 23 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind speeds in the Northland just after 1 p.m. on December 10, 2025, range from 6 to 13 mph. Wind direction is primarily from the northwest. Feel like temperatures in the Northland just after 1 p.m. on December 10, 2025, range from 3-below to 15 above. Readings are measured in degrees Fahrenheit.

A clipper system brings snow showers mainly to the southern half of the Northland tonight, with heavy snowfall rates at times. Wednesday will see some sunshine return as a northerly breeze will make it feel cooler than the teens for highs.

CLIPPER #2 FORECAST ADJUSTMENT:

Due to a southerly shift in the storm's track, the second clipper system pushing through the Northland will bring less snowfall than what I was forecasting 24 hours earlier.

Still expecting some difficult driving conditions the rest of today south of Highway 2.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Aitkin, Burnett, Pine, and Washburn counties through the rest of Tuesday, December 9, 2025, through Wednesday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Ashland, Bayfield, Carlton, Douglas, Iron, Itasca, Sawyer, and southern St. Louis counties through Wednesday morning. The latest snowfall forecast I have for this clipper system has the highest snowfall totals taking place in the I-35 Corridor and the southern half of northwest Wisconsin with 4 to 8 inches likely. It decreases as one travels north across the Northland, with 2 to 5 inches along and near Highway 2, and under 1 inch for the Arrowhead and Rainy River Basin regions. A futurecast model of the snowfall across the Northland at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, shows the precipitation taking place along and south of Highway 2. It will be heavy at times with snowfall rates of up to 1-inch per hour likely in the I-35 Corridor and northwest Wisconsin regions.

Clipper system number one has made its way through the Northland, but clipper system number two is starting to move in.

Expect snow showers for most of us the rest of today. At least temperatures are warmer.
A view of the radar and satellite over the western Great Lakes region at 1:25 p.m. on December 9, 2025, shows a low-pressure system moving from eastern North Dakota southeast into central Minnesota. This will bring snow showers across most of the Northland, with the highest snowfall totals likely in the I-35 corridor. Expect little to no snowfall in the Arrowhead region, with amounts growing from there as one travels from northeast to southwest across the region. Temperatures in the Northland just after 1 p.m. on December 9, 2025, range from 13 to 23 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind speeds in the Northland just after 1 p.m. on December 9, 2025, range from calm to 8 mph. Wind direction is variable across the region. The highest snowfall totals from across the Northland from the first clipper system that passed through Monday and Monday night include 5.2-inches in McNair, Minnesota, 4.5-inches in both Brimson, Minnesota, and Embarrass, Minnesota, 4.2-inches in Tower, Minnesota, 4.1-inches in Silver Bay, Minnesota, 3.8-inches in Red Cliff, Wisconsin, and 3.7-inches in Leonida, Minnesota. A majority of locations across the Northland saw 1 to 3 inches of new snowfall.

8 P.M. RADAR UPDATE:

The first clipper system of the week is passing through the western half of the Northland.

It will continue east over the next several hours.

Total snowfall is still on forecast, with highest amounts north of Highway 2.
The radar over the Northland at 8 p.m. on December 8, 2025, shows a line of snow showers extending from the Rainy River Basin south through the Iron Range and the I-35 Corridor regions. The heaviest snowfall is over the Iron Range and Highway 169 south of Grand Rapids. The snow is moving to the east.

The Northland will see back-to-back clipper systems, bringing snow showers across the region through Tuesday night with widespread 4 to 8 inches of snowfall by Wednesday. Temperatures do warm up to seasonal levels.

BACK TO BACK CLIPPER SYSTEMS:

The Northland will see two clipper systems bring snow showers through the region.

The first passes through this evening and overnight. The highest snowfall totals will be north of Highway 2.
The radar over the Northland shows a line of snow showers just to the west of the region as part of a clipper storm system pushing through the western Great Lakes region. The line of snow is moving from west to east. Snowfall totals from this first clipper system will be under 2 inches south of Highway 2, 2 to 4 inches in the Iron Range, Rainy River Basin, and Upper Peninsula, and 3 to 6 inches in the North Shore/Arrowhead region. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and northern and central St. Louis counties through 6 a.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

It's been a few days since I have posted, but the winter weather has continued across the region.

More snow showers are passing through thanks to a couple clipper systems. Get the shovels ready!
The satellite and radar over the Northland at 1:30 p.m. on December 8, 2025, shows cloudy skies for many parts of the region. Some breaks in the cloud cover are noticeable in the Arrowhead region and the South Shore snowbelt region. A cluster of snow showers is ready to push through from the Dakotas later this evening and tonight. One thing I learned quickly as a young shift forecaster years ago was forecasting low temperatures was usually much harder than forecasting highs.

Case in point this AM's arctic air in the upper Midwest. Note the coldest air pooling in river valleys, urban heat islands with big differences.

This arrival of subzero air is right on schedule climatologically - we typically see the first zero or colder reading this time of year. (Long term average for the current airport location is ~Nov 30).

It will be a very cold night for the Northland with below zero lows and wind chill readings as low as 25-below. A new clipper system will bring back the chances for scattered light snow showers by Thursday afternoon.

The Northland will remain dry tonight, but a clipper system will bring scattered light snow showers through the region starting Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures will be a bit warming, with some spots seeing the 20s for highs.
