at this point I think having non-private polls would be better than having no polls at all
just add a pop-up the first time someone votes that warns them it's publicly available info even if it's not displayed by the app

I think this is inventing a hypocrisy that doesn't actually exist
Every intelligent waymo evangelist I know of also wants good public transit, unfortunately, institutions in America are currently so useless and car-dependent that good busses are harder than inventing driverless cars
