It's a bit more of an esoteric critique than that - to summarize it I find a lot of "evil churches" in fantasy seem to mostly amount to "evil because they have laws and structures," while usually aggressively refusing to actually subvert *Christ*.

Yeah it's often used in FF14 for "we are fighting For Realsies, hold nothing back!" But beyond that even protagonists saying "we've decided not to take prisoners, so kill them all" is *extremely common*.
