Ended up watching, on a whim, the first two seasons of the Genndy Star Wars Clone Wars. Truly the American OVA. They gave one of the mega franchises to an auteur in action cartoons and let him have full access to the toybox to make Epic Gifs. Been years since I saw it, it so holds up.
