Strong 2nd to this, and I would just add that the modern world is much more dependent on extremely accurate and precise timekeeping then most people realize (all cell networks require it, most using gps disciplined oscillators)
NIST's time services going down is less about "oh no things are going to break" (we are very resilient to muti-second drift even if people didn't have backups like GPS) and more about "oh no this is a crucial service we are being reminded has multiple underfunded and vulnerable chokepoints"

"How dare the USG not adopt the position that America Bad" is, I think, kind of a hallmark of immature anarcho-nihilistic "leftism," and that's the real problem with the essay, I think. The politics are bad! Very simple.

People very much DO choose to buy homes in fire prone areas. They should have to pay the financial cost of insuring those homes against fire.

Forcing people who live in South LA to pay higher home insurance premiums to subsidize mansion owners in Malibu and the Hollywood Hills is deeply regressive.

As Republicans at the time complained of being reduced to little more than the accountants of the New Deal, so then do 80s-brained politicos imagine Democrats as the compliance department of the Reagan Revolution

And, not to be a hater but...

If you hear someone saying cooling will be easier in space, you can instantly write them off as someone who has never read a single relevant book or paper and never talked to a single person with undergraduate level expertise. This is very basic.

Part of why this stuff keeps getting underreported is that our media class can’t get it through their thick heads that this is not a weightless debate over political ideology, but a declaration of war on over 100 million Americans, which DHS is announcing an intent to eliminate

You know who hasn’t cowered in the face of terrible violence and changed what they believe?

Minnesota Democrats, who saw one of their own actually get gunned down by a pro-Trump lunatic.

These people are cowards.
“He isn’t worried about Trump’s political wrath; he doesn’t plan to run for reelection.

His fear of speaking out is much more personal: ‘I’d rather my house not get firebombed’”

I don't even have much to say. This was a good vessel, the USN panicked at the slightest hint of delays and now is killing the program. There has not been a single vessel in US Navy service that hasn't been redesigned, delayed, and had some cost overruns in the last 60~ years.
This is the stupidest and most self-destructive USN procurement decision in at least a decade.

Constellation was a relatively healthy program and progressing on a realistic budget and schedule, mostly baseless criticism of it notwithstanding.

Elon Musk's relationship with Grok reminds me of that episode of Spongebob where Spongebob didn't want to make Plankton a krabby patty so Plankton put Spongebob's brain into a robot and the robot wouldn't make him a krabby patty either.

right, precisely. i'm the ox you can't gore. there are things which i would be upset if you did but none of them are absolutely core to my identity, whereas Black people are dealing with problems such as "will there be any Black people in Congress once Roberts is done destroying Reconstruction."
it is honestly somewhat bizarre to be in a place where politics is obviously dominated by issues of identity, including people who claim to be speaking for identities I have, and being sincerely unable to think of a policy that I want as a "man" or a "white person"

Email just went out on my campus that the Immigration Goons ("federal immigration agents") will be in town (Raleigh).

Inter alia, it says,"International students, faculty and staff should carry evidence of their immigration status with them at all times."

The fuck kind of country are we living in?

"We were fine precivilization!" Have you considered how fucking complicated a birth is nowadays and then subtract everything "making it easy"?
these posts--from the same poster--a leftist!--speak to how the lure of the imagined natural grips even people on the left. but actually what is "natural" to humanity fucking sucks. most of human history is a story of violence, scarcity, and rape from which we have only recently escaped

Trump will not just be four years of bad management. The culture of these organizations will be fucked for a long time. The pressure to retaliate and clean house will be strong, and no-one wants to work in a war zone.

$2000 checks everywhere for those with eyes to see
“It could be in the form of a child’s love. Or in a stranger’s kind deed. In fact, the $2,000 could be in the room with you right now, and you were just too busy to notice.

$2,000 is all around us.”

That’s nice but “personal violence is unthinkable” is religious thinking. I would take you more seriously if you were saying this would happen following the return of Jesus Christ
abolitionists want to create a world where personal violence is unthinkable because the underlying reasons why we hurt each other have been addressed to thoroughly that harm never feels like than option. i hope we succeed.
I‘m tired of being nice about this; “abolitionism” has had years to develop a non-idiot policy program and the best they’ve come up with is ”murder without even the pretense of juridical process.” And I am not nut-picking; this is all over abolitionist writing.
