A fine made book (1919) about Amsterdam printer Spin uses different symbolic en-têtes (by Dirk Nijland) for each chapter, e.g.:

Half raised curtain: story begins;
Rise of lithography;
Impact of Belgian independence;
Rail and shipping networks shaping book trade.

A little treat to myself for my 35th birthday. An illustrated 1920 pamplet on 'Bopomofo,' the Chinese transliteration system instituted by RoC and still in use in Taiwan. search.worldcat.org/title/26031012
Front cover of the pamphlet, with Chinese and English titles (Phonetic picture dictionary = 看圖識字) and related information, "The National phonetic symbols and word-forms interpreted by mimetic and illustrative cuts arranged according to rhyme endings," "Phonetic Committee Number 22." Page 1 of the pamphlet. Includes various words with "p" sound and illustrations. Preface to the text, in Chinese and English.

Today, with the heart of a pilgrim, I visited the grave of Johann Joseph Hoffmann, the 1st professor of Sinology and Japanology in Leiden.
To my surprise, just one gravestone away, lies Taco Roorda, the 19th-century professor of Javanese.

It's not unimaginable, but the jury may decide to prioritize researchers that need to see more books.

We also have a 'suggestions box' for digitizations: consciencebibliotheek.be/en/page/you-.... No guarantees, but if there's spare time on the scanner we could schedule it in.

birthplace & 郡望: people were often called by birthplace: 柳宗元 from 河东 became 柳河东, 王安石 from 临川 was 王临川. But there was also 郡望, prestige tied to ancestral clans. Sometimes this outweighed birthplace. 杜甫’s ancestors came from 杜陵 where 杜 clan was famous. So although born in 巩县, he called himself 杜陵野老! 3/

甫: 甫 in Classical Chinese is a phonetic loan for 父, a respectful term for men (from <说文解字>) (eg. 夸父 in myth, 尚父 in 诗经). It was never used for women’s names. Therefore we see, 杜甫’s parents really gave him a great name! 2/

名&字: 名was given name chosen by elders at birth, used within family. 字was adopted at adulthood, for peers to use in social setting. Only elites had字; commoners did not. E.g. in 史记: 萧何, 韩信, 樊哙 and so on had only名, since they were from lower class. But 张良 had 字 which was子房, as he's from aristocracy. 1/

Reading a book《古人的称谓》, which gives an overview of complicated naming system in ancient China.
A little quiz for Sinologists here:

杜甫, 字 “子美”, often called himself “杜陵野老.” Later generations also call him “杜陵,” though he was from 河南巩县.
How should we understand all these different names for杜甫?🤗
