The Watering Hole was a #slapdash tinderbox of a place, with vermin lurking in every corner. I’m pretty sure some poor rando was being murdered with an axe in the bathroom. But the ghoulish bartender poured generous doubles of top-shelf booze. So, there’s that.

It’s hard as shit writing a book and having the confidence to put said book into the world.

I read a few pages before going to sleep last night and I really like it so far. Has the feel of an old noir novel. Or an Ed Brubaker graphic novel (incredibly complimentary).

“Watch,” said Max, eyes turning skyward, voice lowering to only a mild boom, considering the sheer power of the speakers before him, “as we allow time to move once more. Not at great speed, no, but at the merest fraction of normality. Up there! See! The only light in the universe, unless you count Marleen’s beautiful smile.” That raised a chuckle. It always did, even though no-one called Marleen worked there. At least, not after the grafting incident. But it didn’t matter. It was the show. Only the show mattered and, as behind Max the immense screen showed him standing right beside the nascent universe, he spread out his fingers and the light pulsed outward around his image. “The explosion, slowed to a crawl. Everything that will ever be is contained in that ball of super-heated mass. Everyone you have ever known, or will know, contains atoms from this. The rapid expansion from a hot, dense state,” he paused. A perfectly calculated pause, “which is something I’m sure many of you are experiencing right now.” Cue self-aware laughter. A further pause. A further lowering of the lights, but not so much that the servers can’t find the vehicles to pass food to several of those guests that could never eat enough. His eyes passed over the audience. “Nothing but matter. No stars. No planets. No … taxes.” Another pause, another smile and another cheer. “Bet you wish it could stay like this forever, but it can’t. Time, as they say, marches on, but if you’re staying for the matinee, it all happens again in an hour. Gentlebeings of all species, I present … the universe!” Timed to perfection, the great time engines of the Big Bang Burger Bar allowed the progress of time to carry on as it always had, as it always would, every hour of every day. So long as those time engines didn’t break down and cause the obliteration of everything and everyone in the dome. But that was almost certainly unlikely to ever happen.

Hatchet-hands Harry was considered a bit of an #oddball by his fellow murder ghouls. He had no stomach for hacking up random citizens with his hatchet hands. He longed to be a driftwood artist.
