Hand quilting update: first pass done on my tablet sleeve!

Pattern: Tula Pink’s Moonbow, shrunk down to use EPP
Fabric: Tilda

Or there’s this: double-4patch. It makes an Irish Chain with scrappy background. I used 2” strips for the navy & cream 4-patches, and sewed each to a matching navy 3.5” square, and put them together in 6.5” blocks. You could size up to 2.5/4.5”=>8.5”.

I went scrappy cream, but you don’t need to.

This is a quilt I made after seeing a photo in a magazine ad. It’s really simple strip piecing; details in the alt text.
The pillows were a bit harder because of the half square triangles, but still doable for a confident beginner.

Note: prewash all reds & check for dye bleed before sewing!!!

The quilt consists of three block types: one is a red and white checkerboard, 5 x 5 squares; the second is red and white stripes, three red stripes with two white ones between; and the third is a big plain white square. When put together, the blocks make a sort of plaid pattern, and the whole thing is set on point. You could swap the positions of red & white to make red the dominant colour, and it would be very effective. I used 2-1/2 inch strips to make the checkerboards and the striped blocks, and 10-1/2 inch white squares in between. Around the edge, where you can’t see, there are white setting triangles, before a solid red border. In hindsight, I would have used a patterned fabric for the border; but that’s just personal preference. The pillow shams are a different pattern, consisting of half square triangles in red with white background, making up an eight pointed star, surrounded by two concentric rings of red. The pattern is called carpenters star.

Everyone brings their own ideas and you sample others and some are familiar with a twist, some are interesting but not to your taste, some are bad, some are life changing. You can get into a discussion about recipes or technique, or what have you as people talk about the food. If someone brings mashed potatoes, you can debate about the appropriateness for a potluck: It is too bland? Will it get cold on the table? Do potatoes make up too much of our diet? But if someone puts a streaming platter of dog shit on the table, we're not going to debate it. And when we tell them to take it off the table, it's not because we are afraid of eating their dog shit or we think that it's going to revolutionize lunch but we don't want to allow that to happen. We tell them to get it off the table because there is no debate to be had. It's dog shit. It's not an open question, it's not a matter of palates or picky eaters. That's why we don't engage with white supremacists and neo-Nazis, and it's why we don't (or shouldn't) let them come to the potluck.

Quilt retreat day 1 progress: goal of 40 scrappy 9-patches achieved. Tomorrow I’ll cut them up and make 40 bigger 9-patches.

This sure was the *big* prize turkey: it never could have stood on its legs, that bird. 31 lbs = 40+ servings of meat over the winter, plus 5 or 6 big pots of soup. 🦃 🥣

#SewAndTell week 4: one of my favourite quilts. Its batting is wool, so it’s cozy & warm but still light. I took the pattern from an ad in an old magazine, rented a longarm to do the white blocks, & finished quilting with my walking foot.

(The darkest reds bleed, unfortunately.)

Making progress on this planned-improv quilt. A couple of small gaps to be filled in with black, but most of the big panels are sewn together.
Various quilt blocks in black and shades of purple are pinned to a design wall. There are chevrons and checkerboards, stripes and pinwheels, HSTs and HRTs, flying geese and log cabin variants, arranged in a chaotic but hopefully pleasing way.
