Not sure I'd ever be able to get over my initial reaction to those N64 Castlevania games to give them a proper look. Absolutely hated them at the time. Ended up hating them even more in retrospect when I finally played Symphony years later and saw what I was missing, not having a Playstation.

I usually go a few years between SOTN playthroughs, and in that time I slowly forget that it's one of the most fun games ever made.

Then I start playing it and immediately remember that it is in fact one of the most fun games ever made.

Death's bumbling minions, Slogra and Gaibon, a sort of Bebop and Rocksteady or Bulk and Skull duo, foolishly step to Alucard, seemingly unaware that he's going to destroy their dumb asses with his sexy vampire prowess.

In Castlevania's elaborate clock room, Alucard crosses paths with the mysterious Maria Renard. She leans against the wall like a cool lady before introducing herself and explaining her quest to locate the missing heir to the Belmont clan, her homeboy Richter.

Alucard naively attempts to parley with a nice young lady, perhaps unaware that she isn't a real lady but rather the mimic tail of a ferocious ambush-hunting beast.

Progressing through the twisted entrails of Castlevania, Alucard is assaulted by a doppelganger from the cosmic void. Uninterested in a psychological battle, Alucard simply beats the doppelganger into submission and banishes it back to the infinite abyss.

Related, I played Red Dead Online for a month, and one time I shot a duck (for animal fat) and was standing knee-deep in a placid pond with a duck in my hand when another player, an indigenous person, possibly hacking, appeared from nowhere and killed my colonizer ass with arrows.

That was great.

Continuing Koudelka. I'm already on Disc 3 (of 4)!

The standout feature of this game is the story scenes with full voice acting and motion capture. The writing and acting aren't always GREAT, but are always impressive, and have a lot of heart. Has the feel of a passion project.

Edward squares up to a Lovecraftian monstrosity while Koudelka prepares to own it with her magic spells. He's lookin' pretty good in those jeans. Cute little backpack, too.

Ambushed by a petty thief with a deadly six-shooter who is weirdly resistant to arcane magics, Koudelka goes ape shit with her flanged mace. Her anachronistic 90's outfit is cool and cute.

Edward and Koudelka recoil when confronted by a horrific monster that seems pulled straight out of John Carpenter's "The Thing". Its body horror-inducing tentacle heads loom over them in the foreground.

Separated from her erstwhile companions by an extremely aggro Gargoyle, Koudelka sets out on her own in the monastery's courtyard.

Wild Fang aka Tecmo Knight is a violent brawler with some mechanical depth to it. Both the Tiger & Giant forms have their uses, and you can save yourself trouble by blowing up monsters with bombs.
Also neat is jumping between bosses and bashing them to bits.

Resident Evil continues.

I finally died for the first time. Not to any of the fearsome monsters encountered thus far but to a damn boulder.

Then I hit a puzzle that requires an item I completely missed and will have to backtrack to find.

Jill Sandwich rushes hurriedly down a dark and spooky forest trail, Beretta M92F at the ready. Malicious birds and malcontent dogs stalk her from the shadows, ready to waste her ammo.

Jill enters a room, shotgun ready, unaware that the largest and hairiest tarantula ever lurks just above her head. This photographer, dear reader, loosed a sort of Hank Hill-esque "buhhhhhh!" in terror.

Jill investigates an underwater control room as a gigantic battle-scarred Great White shark smashes its snout into the glass, eying her for a meal.

Having now slain giant spiders and sharks, Jill Sandwich bravely continues her quest into darkness, emboldened in her ability to whoop ass. Her trusty shotgun (the regular kind, because she callously let Richard die) yearns for more combat.

The most novel thing about the story is that your three party members are all various types of assholes to different degrees and don't particularly get along. They're all hiding things from each other and constantly bickering. Absolutely love that.

The combat system feels pretty vestigial, unfortunately. There's a neat weapon durability mechanic (yes, I like weapon durability) that doesn't feel fully realized.

This could've easily been an adventure game without combat. Maybe my opinion will change by the end of the game. We'll see!
