❗Among their electoral potential, social democratic parties face very few strategic dilemmas. Left-progressive appeals resonate most strongly.

New study in @worldpolitics.bsky.social

New article out in World Politcs. We analyze how different groups react to varying programs of social democratic parties. We find less trade-offs than often assumed. Generally, more left-progressive programs increase support among social democratic potentials

It was a privilege to discuss this great book by @ztruchlewski.bsky.social, @nenaoana.bsky.social, @alexmoise.bsky.social and Hanspeter Kriesi @ces-europe.bsky.social . It is a must read on how Europeans stood together during the pandemic and whether such solidarity was exceptional or the new norm.

Out now🎉 - Evidence (from distribution analyses and machine learning models on EES 2014-2024 data) of strong similarities and growing convergence in EU public opinion, particularly on economic issues. Common right-ward shifts on immigration, yes - but underlying drivers still vary. shorturl.at/KCx0S

Even so, when Europeans are angry or scared—which is often—they don’t yell “Let’s leave!” like Hirschman thought they might. No. They basically say: “More Europe! Now! But with less meetings, and ideally someone who knows what they’re doing.” So instead of exiting, they’re voicing.
ztruchlewski.bsky.social
Shockingly, most people said: “Yes please, more EU.” But not everywhere. Fiscal policy is still treated like someone’s brought a sweaty cheese sandwich into a crowded lift: technically allowed, but morally wrong.
ztruchlewski.bsky.social
Using surveys from 15 countries we asked people about six terrifying topics: fiscal policy (money maths), health (not dying), climate (weather guilt), migration (other people), social policy (being skint), and “defence” (vaguely shouting at Russia).

This paper asks a big, serious question: Do Europeans actually want the EU to do more? Or is it one of those performative things, like pretending to enjoy hiking, yoga or understanding p-values?
ztruchlewski.bsky.social
This process is called “binding,” which sounds like a weird Fifty Shades of Brussels thing, but here it just means the EU trying to do actual government things, like fixing stuff or being blamed for things it didn’t do.
ztruchlewski.bsky.social
Between 2005 and 2025, the EU had what experts technically refer to as “a total meltdown, repeatedly.” Every time Europe faced a new disaster—money stuff, human stuff, germ stuff, or sky being angry stuff—it responded by gluing more Europe onto itself.
