Win was sitting on the edge of his bed, his shirt rolled up to his collarbone, buffing at his scabbed- over wound with his knuckles. When he noticed me lingering in the doorway, he dropped his shirt with clumsy haste and a mumbled apology, as if I hadn’t seen his bare chest a million times and there was some possibility it might offend me. “Death magic scars weird,” he said. And then, with that same, false cheer he’d been punishing me with for three days, he added: “It looks like it’s been stuffed with tourmaline. I might glitter for the rest of my life.”

There was no good way to describe what happened next, certainly nothing that could be put into scientific context. Joric’s flesh began to turn intangible, like a sugar cube dropped into a hot cup of tea. For a moment, the vague shape of him remained, but his skin and clothing dissolved into a swarm of individual points that rippled collectively, as if disturbed by a wind. Then the swarm spiraled away in tiny wisps of flying particles until there was nothing left in her palms but the tips of her own fingers.

As it sped past Joric, Fion opened her mouth to warn him away from what he was obviously about to do, but his hand was already snaking through the black iron bars and over the wall. He came back out with a purple and yellow pansy between his fingers and a roguish grin on his face. “Joric!” she scolded, catching up with him. “That was—” “Worth it,” he said, tucking the flower behind her ear. He tipped her head up and kissed her. “I wish I could stay.” Fion’s ire drained out of her, and her eyes welled.

I mean earlier?” She wrinkled her nose at him and let out an exasperated huff. “Is it your intention to be perplexing?” His shoulders slumped. “No. It’s just … I don’t think I’ll ever really be used to it.”

I’m trembling, and I hate it. I’ve never been so stupidly afraid of anyone in my life. “You swore fealty to me, but you did not do as I asked,” the Moth King says. His words are all business, but now that the throne room is otherwise empty, his tone is sort of reasonable. If I close my eyes, I can almost pretend he’s my manager, gently scolding me for screwing up a triple foam extra hot almond milk latte with two shots on the bottom and two on the top.

The ditch dead-ends on the east side of the castle, which is apparently where the Dawn Lord throws his trash. It stinks here, too, but the smell is more like a fast-food dumpster than an open grave. A pile of bricks and broken boards lies next to the castle wall, and there’s a mound a few feet away from it that I’ll call a compost pile out of kindness. Bits of paper flit around in the wind like leaves, which strikes me as odd for a treeless land that clearly has no industry until I remember that the foot soldiers basically turn into paper when they’re killed and I have to swallow my gag reflex.

I’d had my fill of other people’s sex fantasies, so I picked a guard whose imaginings had placed him at the helm of a huge, battle-worn cog with tattered red sails. His dream ship toiled through rough seas, climbing swells and bursting through curtains of foamy spray, but in the way of all fantasies, it was bereft of the more unpleasant details, and my guts remained in a pleasant state of neutrality. If this had been the real world, I’d have been leaning over the gunwale, dedicating the contents of my stomach to the Sea God.

Opposite, Death presided over offers of bundled ravens’ feathers and crumbling chunks of black tourmaline. Behind each altar, a black doorway led deeper into the maze. “Fifth chamber on the east side,” I said, counting. “Behind Death.” “Naturally,” Win grumbled. “Let’s get this over with.”

No one touched them. They’re in their own little pouches.” He cracked a shell in two with his fingers and offered its contents to me. I shook my head. There was no point in encouraging his boorishness. He popped the spurned nut into his mouth. “I know what your problem is.”
