Wonderful German gardens & wonderful German words on BBC 1’s Monty Don’s Rhineland Gardens. I do like a nice ‘Schrebergarten’. #ShoutoutforGerman @uk.diplo.de @daad-uk-ireland.bsky.social

🛑 "That's it – only German now!"

Ex-England, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Cologne striker Tony Woodcock learned to speak German during his time at 1. FC Köln.

Tony's #ShoutOutForGerman advice: anyone can learn German!

Another highlight last term was the annual "Year Abroad on Stage" where students from across the School of Modern Languages get to reflect on their experiences on the year abroad and turn it into a sketch show. The German contribution focussed heavily on Deutsche Bahn. #ShoutOutForGerman

I know I'm late to the party, but here's a #ShoutOutForGerman! I'm glad I learned the language and think more people should be speaking it. Take that, Trump! (Thanks @annatwright.bsky.social for showing me this post #ITICommunity)
Trump redet gerade in Davos.

Our fantastic Bristol German Society has created a Family Scheme which connects students across different year groups. The "families" had meals together and plans are afoot for a family scavenger hunt in TB2. A great way for students across cohorts to get to know each! #ShoutOutForGerman

On October 2nd our colleagues Mark and Ruth organised an event to reflect on 35 years of German unity. It was wonderful to get the Bristol-Hannover and Bristol Anglo-German societies together and mix with our students. #ShoutOutForGerman

This week’s #WordyWednesday is embracing the wintry feel... Have you heard of “Schnee von Gestern”? It’s a great way to say that something is old news. It can even be used in a way that matches the English saying ‘water under the bridge’, depending on the context of conversation! #ShoutOutForGerman

We asked guests to tell us their favourite German word at a reception for German-speaking civil servants, as part of #ShoutOutForGerman week.

Alongside some top-notch animal names, we got some fantastic compound words and a few untranslatables too!

What's yours? 🤔

die Fibu
der Azubi
die Kripo
das Mofa
der Tüv

are all shortened forms of long German words that sound far cooler than what they mean.

We couldn't agree more with Sascha! And even if you missed out learning German at school, you can still pick it up later in life, for example during your studies as a degree (from scratch, even!) or in one of the language centre courses! #ShoutOutForGerman
