I finally finished this Luna commission. I can safely say that Actias luna is the most popular moth in North America. I have painted it often, but each one is unique. The painting is 30X40 acrylic on canvas.

The large and glamorous Luna moths are always early spring visitors here in Virginia. I never tire of seeing them. These two male Actias luna showed up the same night at my UV lights. If you examine them closely you can see the subtle differences between them. Moths are indeed unique individuals.

A photo of a pale lime green Luna Moth resting on a white sheet. The moth has feathery brown antennae which indicates that this is a male. It has brown legs and a brown stripe along the leading edge of its forewings. The wings are a light shade of lime green which is indicative of a late season flight (This one was observed in late August.) earlier flights are a darker more intense green. There are 2 small yellow eyespots on the forewings in the front median area. The rear wings have long swallow-like "tails" and slightly larger yellow eyespots in the middle. A photograph of a rich reddish brown Tulip Tree Silkmoth resting on green Poke Weed ( Phytolacca americana) leaves. the photo is of the side of the moth which has eye-spots at the upper tips of the undersides of its forewings. There are white chevron-like markings in the middle of both the fore and hind wings as well as scalloped lines along the edges of both wings. The pokeweed leaves are elliptical and some of the flower stalks are seen just out of focus in the foreground. A photo of a yellow and brown Imperial Moth from the top as it rests on a wooden surface. The moth's wings are yellow mottled with large areas of brown. Figure-eight shaped brown eyespots are along the front middle of the forewings and circular eyespots are in the middle of the hind wings. This moth's patterning and color is very similar to autumn fallen grape and tulip poplar leaves which offers camouflage during it's late Summer/early Autumn flights.
