Mind-blowingly rare first editions of esoteric books that I got to hold yesterday (courtesy of Justin Sledge), #2 of 5:

First Hebrew printing of Sefer Yetzirah (Mantua, Italy, 1562), the early Kabbalistic account of how G-d created the universe through the 22 letters of the alefbet & the 10 sefirot

If I had a magic wand I’d make Aramaic print - Hebrew alefbet- more legible, maybe more like Syriac (but not connected).

At some point I’m need to do a lesson on Hebrew numerals because while I can figure out a lot of the internal logic just from knowing the alefbet I still want to know why, for instance, what logically should be י"ה is ט"ו and if it is, as I suspect, for “the former looks too much like יהוה” reasons

There are 5 books in the penny room. 5. And they look like furniture store prop books. And is that a wooden cigar box?

Oh for sure. I’ve been reading and studying for 10 years 🤓 I’m actually developing my own Alefbet correspondences atm!

#Heathens and #Hebrews… have a lot in common, starting with the fact א, the first sign in the Hebrew alefbet (alphabet), and #Fehu, the first rune in the futhark, both indicate ‘cattle’.“

Quote by Diana L. Paxson from Foreword of Casting Lots by Elisheva Nesher.
