Mould outbreaks are every archives’ nightmare. This one came out of nowhere in a monitored store & developed very quickly - a big job to get it all professionally cleaned & then moved to a new store. #Archive30 #ArchiveNightmares #BritishMuseum #Archive

Our Preservation Assistant has been hard at work removing some #ArchiveNightmares from Paul Flynn’s, former Labour MP, collection. Rusted staples, paperclips & polypockets are being removed as the collection is repackaged as part of a grant from the National Manuscript Conservation Trust. #Archive30

Of course, it is satisfying to overcome a challenge, especially with the privilege of handling historic archives, but some #ArchiveNightmares - such as new acquisitions of unsorted papers seen here in the 1960s - never change.

🧟 Mouldy papers are one our #ArchiveNightmares here at the Archives Centre.

📄 This pile of papers from the Leo Amery collection have been badly damaged by mould prior to accessioning. Although the mould has been treated & deactivated the paper remains very fragile.
