#historians #arthistorians of #witchcraft help! I’m hoping to argue that this print in Guazzo’s Compendiun Maleficarum is the ONLY image showing animals that are witches transformed (to enter the victims’ houses more easily) and NOT familiars as all other images. Anyone knows of others?

A tour-de-force of scholarship and detective work: Fara Dabhoiwala reveals that a portrait of an 18th-century Black scientist, long dismissed as a caricature, is in fact a record of the man's mastery of Newtonian physics—and the only painting made in 1759 of the return of Halley's comet.
Fara Dabhoiwala · A Man of Parts and Learning: Francis Williams Gets His Due
The only certainty about the picture is that it shows Francis Williams. No one has ever been able to discover who...

Calling #arthistorians and #classicists does anyone know who/what is depicted in this image? It's a mural on the ceiling of the entrance hall of a house I'm researching. It was painted around 1850 I think #househistory

Here's a question for #arthistorians #criticaltheorists #mediatheorists. Where do we look for a genealogy of this kind of political imagery? Which aspects of it are new, & which are genuinely novel conjunctions?
The fascistic AI imagery of the grotesque Trump Gaza video aims to alienate, disaffect, and deny futures. The point is not to coalesce publics behind visions of the future, but to assert power over futurity itself through the shitty banality of its anesthetics.
There is nothing crazy about this. This horrific video epitomizes the logic of current meme-fascism: it's a colonization of the imagination that precedes and aestheticizes real neo-imperialist violence, dressed up in the glossy looks of stock imagery, influencer content and online scamming

Nowadays leading arthistorians think this beautiful portret was painted by Maarten van Heemskerck, probably van Scorels most successful pupil.

#Arthistorians make terrible art critics. And #artcritics make horrible art historians.

#Question for #Arthistorians

How did artworks get from Max Silberberg, a Jewish art collector who was murdered by Nazis in the Holocaust, to so many museums in Europe and the USA ?

I inherited this marine painting from my late friend but he didn't know who painted it. Supposedly this was his grandfather's ship. Are there any #arthistorians or appraisers on Bluesky that could help me out?
November 25, 2024 at 3:19 PM
Yes and I understand that. I've forced a code on two arthistorians with (semi-)professional accounts so they can have a kind of pied à terre here if Twitter really becomes unusable. But it's true that Bluesky hasn't reached the level Twitter had and still has.
