There are often bi characters in a bl, who end up together as m/m, so I guess this is why I stress more the main relationship focus for how I define it.

I think of bl as simply a same-sex m/m relationship in the plot. It could be written by anyone and have any approach to writing and characterization, initiation of intimacy, etc. but I do find what you are saying about how they might differ depending on who is writing it interesting.

That’s why I’d take it *historically* but not generally. I also think that if a man, or non binary person (queer or otherwise) was inspired by BLs to write their own m/m romance, it would not preclude it from being a BL

I think I may be conflating two different points: BL is romance defined by a HEA vs. how does the portrayal of m/m relationships change with the gender and orientation of the author?

I think you're making a great point about BL being defined by genre conventions. I still think the gender of the creators is important because it influences how the relationships are portrayed. The pov of someone who's been in m/m relationshipa vs someone who isn't writing from that lived experience

Like I said, I'm not too familiar with BL, but western M/M romance often tends to focus on very traditionally masculine men -- athletes, military, CEOs, etc. -- which I haven't seen much of in discussions of BL. There are some more androgynous or feminine men, but they're much more rare.

BL too. A distinct Japanese style of m/m romance targeted at a specific market (and onmy recently became a little mainstream).
But in the same sense, Thai BL (for example), which follows the Japanese BL blueprint, adds their own flavour to the genre too to match their needs and their market.

I think of BL more broadly because even though how the stories are told can be different, it's all romances written by women for women. Thai BL is different from Japanese yaoi is different from English language m/m romance novels but the by women/for women dynamic is still in play.
