While a shorthand distinction of ‘idol’ & ‘serious’ (non-idol) #cdrama can be useful, it seems to me it has also accumulated a lot of baggage
While it can be used as a neutral genre label, it is often *misused* as a value judgment, reflecting a particular subjective aesthetic prejudice

I started #ToMyBelovedThief yesterday and I was thinking it was such a strong start but didn’t I remember there’s a soul-swap plot 🤔 I was liking it so much and getting so nervous about the soul-swap but now that it happened I’m into it! They aren’t cringe! I’m impressed!

I started #ToMyBelovedThief yesterday and I was thinking it was such a strong start but didn’t I remember there’s a soul-swap plot 🤔 I was liking it so much and getting so nervous about the soul-swap but now that it happened I’m into it! They aren’t cringe! I’m impressed!

A Xiaohongshu post on Chinese idol dramas touched on the same points I made about them: "Historical dramas don't require much acting skill, or even original voice acting, but they do need beautiful, photogenic faces, extremely lavish costumes and props."
