It's a longstanding tradition that we go to the sea on #NewYearsDay
Although now we live in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, it's usually a firth, and not the sea!
Ventured east today, to Burntisland in Fife.
Pretty chill out there, and a few flakes of snow fell while charging the EV.
Absolutely beautiful sky, hues of red & pink.

Sunday 28 December 1879.

As a storm raged, all passengers and crew aboard the Burntisland to Dundee train died when the 13 central spans of the Tay Bridge collapsed into the river as the train crossed.

This memorial lists the names of those known to be aboard, 146 years ago today.

May they RIP.

FACT OF THE DAY. 28 December 1879. Tay Railway Bridge collapsed, during a storm, as a train from Burntisland to Dundee passed over it. An estimated 75 people died. The bridge was designed by Sir Thomas Bouch. The inquiry ruled that the designer had not factored in the danger of high winds.

Burntisland at sunset lived up to its name today with The Binn hill overlooking the town burnished with glorious orange light.

Plus the view along the Links towards the town centre.

We have had ferries and briefly a hovercraft but perhaps a cable car across the Forth is the answer for Fife commuters?

The longest one in the world is 8km, Burntisland to Granton just so happens to be 8km so it would be slightly longer.

Kinghorn to Leith via Inchkeith would be 11km.
My letter to the Oxford Mail today on… the cable car. 🚡🚠💚

The Scotch dialect is singularly rich in terms of reproach against the winter wind. Snell, blae, nirly, and scowthering, are four of these significant vocables…

William Minto’s body was held here after the wreck of the vessel Unition of Guernsey, travelling from London to Burntisland when it got struck by a storm. Sadly William, thanks to statements by his shipmates, was deemed to have accidentally drowned.

I'm incredibly lucky and live in a town with an actual greengrocer who stocks satsumas. Including stalk and green leaf. Macaulays in Burntisland if you're ever in Fife

It was named Burntisland in 1586; theories suggest it's from burned fishermen's huts or " Burnet's Land ".

Hi Sandy! I was in Burntisland some years ago, and got curious about the name. It is not an island and not burnt:) I asked around and also checked the internet, but could not find a conclusive answer. What is your take on this? Thanks!
