#CarSpreading
We're glad that the new #RoadSafety Strategy includes a nod to the size & weight of larger cars, and recognises the work of @cardiffcouncil.bsky.social to introduce higher parking fees for heavier cars. It's a step closer towards tackling #Carspreading.
🙏 to @bloomsburyair.bsky.social for the pic.

There were more than 1 million larger cars - SUVs - sold in 2023. This is around 60% of sales and is projected to be 75% of sales in coming years*.

🚸 We believe children should be safe travelling to and from school.

We agree. Also need deterrents for driving increasingly large cars #carspreading
“These new powers do not go far enough to protect pedestrians. It’s disappointing not to see a nationwide prohibition.”

Our @charitycat.bsky.social responds to the news that local authorities will receive legal powers to restrict pavement parking. https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/pavement-parking

None of these vehicles fit inside on street parking spaces and consequently they should not be being issued with residents’ parking permits. This seems very obvious to me.

It's remarkable Westminster Council doesnt charge for car parking in the West End after 18:30... coupled with free congestion charge from TfL and no wonder there's a wild west of traffic in the evenings 😬. More and more SUVs don't help either... #carspreading

Great to see new powers for councils to end the blight of pavement parking in England. This announcement couldn’t have come soon enough given cars are getting heavier and wider every year making pavement parking even more untenable and dangerous. #carspreading

The Government has announced new regulations and devolved power

In June our research revealed that the bonnet height of new cars in Europe is increasing by half a centimetre a year, driven by the growth in new SUV sales.

This “carspreading” trend is a worrying development for road safety, as high-fronted cars bring a higher risk of fatality in a crash.

Carspreading. Thirty years ago, there was plenty of space on this road for cars to pass one another. Sheep House Lane, Rivington.

And the charming and exceptional Oliver Lord from Clean Cities won the “Council Influencer” award.

And just check out his shirt - basically sporting William Morris! His carspreading campaign of late has been so important. My son watched it on Newsround in his class. /12

Visiting American here, tangential subject. Just spent 10 days driving first time all over GB and I don't know what the issue is on Tory St, but you absolutely MUST fight the fight against carspreading. I love my MINIs and even a Range Rover is too fucking big here.

Big cars: Are they a good or bad thing?
In December Cardiff became the first UK council to introduce higher parking charges for heavier vehicles - but is it fair? Ricky has been looking into the issue.

The BBC investigates British car bloat and "Chelsea tractors":

"The standard minimum width of an on-street parking space is 1.8m, [but] more than half of the 100 top-selling cars in the UK were fractionally wider than this."
