Yes but there are sometimes some idiosyncrasies (or at least this is true of the latest version of ChemDoodle opening files made from ChemDraw 16)

Does ChemDoodle open ChemDraw files?

Chemdoodle here; we never had ChemDraw 😭

We also switched to chemdoodle. Been generally happy with it, not perfect but good enough

I’m in government not in academia, but we switched to chemdoodle

I’m a big fan of chemdoodle

I have found ChemDoodle pretty great.
It is not just cheaper - it is better than ChemDraw (especially "modern" versions > 16.0).
I recently got me a license because I am switching all my machines to Linux, and was very pleasantly surprised.

Marvin and/or ChemDoodle.

Both have pros and cons compared to ChemDraw. I like the NMR and other prediction modules in Marvin, and it can be obtained for free-ish.

ChemDoodle is expensive and more buggy, but it opens all my fancy .cdx-es, and drawing experience feels better than ChemDraw.

Here are some showstoppers I experienced with v.1.4.1. Are there workarounds?
1. PDF fonts from Marvin, ChemDraw, or ChemDoodle are not recognized
2. eps fonts kinda work, but substitution is buggy
3. Imported line thickness is inconsistent

Also, the interface is... ouch. Rotating an artboard? Why?

ChemDoodle comes really close. I would have been way more positive about it if not for the "perpetual" license activation shenanigans. It just left a really bad aftertaste. And I feel that for $750, there should be no bugs in the core undo logic.

Then there is ChemDoodle. It's as close as it gets to ChemDraw, and has a few extra features. But there are major drawbacks too. The NMR prediction UX is subpar, there are bugs in basic functionality like undo, and it is $750. And the company's past deeds make me skeptical about paying that much.

Thanks! I think I can just download the schemes and convert them to editable structures pretty easily. We use Chemdoodle since Chemdraw is expensive lol
January 16, 2025 at 2:53 PM
Agreed. Unfortunately, I’m not able to use ChemDraw 💰 We use ChemDoodle because it’s cheaper. Importing images is okay with this software but still not great. Especially with something more complicated than benzaldehyde lol

Yeah, we swapped to ChemDoodle a while back, for $$$ reasons.
And for simple structure drawing running locally but in your browser, Ketcher: github.com/epam/ketcher
Download the 'standalone' option, unzip, open 'index.html' file.
