Just back from a Portland District 3 event by CityClub. All three D3 councilors were there, moderated by Sophie Peel. At one point, they asked the audience of a few hundred: in this budget crisis, whose budgets would you cut?

Fire Dept.: No hands went up
Parks: 3 hands
Police: Several dozen hands

Forget fusion (for a minute): This is where a clean energy expert is placing his near-term bets
A Seattle CityClub panel discusses clean energy at a Civic Cocktail event, from left: Lisa Stiffler, GeekWire; Gregg Small, Climate Solutions; Emily Moore, Sightline Institute; and Dan Schwartz, University of Washington. (Entwined Portraits Photo) There are all kinds of sexy, new clean energy technologies on the horizon. Atom-smashing fusion devices replicating the power of the sun. Sleek next-gen nuclear reactors splitting isotopes. So what is Dan Schwartz, founding director of the University of Washington’s Clean Energy Institute, excited about? Solar power and batteries. President Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the roof of the White House in 1979.

Good news for Eugene: River Road bridge is going to be finished in the next couple of months.

Bad news for me: Phone is at 9 percent and I can't live skeet anymore.

(Also bad news for me: Chelsea own goal! DAMN IT.)

Questions are as always so boring yet so interesting. I sort of miss being a reporter, lol. (This question is about the River Road bridge.) #Eugene #CityClub (one of my students did a great preso on this last term actually!)

Mayor Knudson: "City of Eugene's values are clear, State of Oregon's values are clear," and Eugene Police do not now and will not help "when no laws are being broken" (this is about protests against ICE at the old federal courthouse in Eugene, IMO). #CityClub #Eugene

Question about ICE in Eugene, person says why hasn't the mayor spoken against it. She says "It's wrong, it shouldn't be happening, and there are numerous court cases that are happening." That is ... clearer than I expected. #CityClub #Eugene

Break from my CityClub posting to post O M F G HOW COOL #Shakespeare
In Daniel Swift’s forthcoming THE DREAM FACTORY, he makes the argument that Bottom in Midsummer is Dutch. Shoreditch, where the play premiered, was flush with Dutch weavers, and this would explain all the Bottom speaking French jokes.

I should note that Eugene lost its emergency room like two years ago, and now everyone has to go to Springfield, across the Willamette River, either to PeaceHealth's big but always full RiverBend hospital, or to the smaller and also always full McKenzie-Willamette Hospital. #Eugene #CityClub

The Xtian college in town, Bushnell, has apparently announced some nursing or health care education? Hm. I'll find an article. Me personally, I'd like to hear the Mayor talk about Black Thistle Street Aid, one of my faves. www.blackthistlestreetaid.org #CityClub #Eugene #HealthCare

Interviewer has asked about fire district, health care, the status of (the incredibly great, canceled in Eugene) CAHOOTS organization, what makes a downtown safe, etc. Mayor Knudson is talking about trying to get health care access back into the city. #CityClub #Eugene

The mayor is talking about Measure 5 & Measure 47:50, both of which messed up (to put it mildly) revenue streams for cities. More info:

Welp I forgot to log back in here immediately after traveling, but here I am to live-post Eugene City Club's interview of the Eugene mayor re, I think they're calling it, "the crisis of homelessness." FYI, Eugene often has highest percentage of unhoused folks per capita in the US. #CityClub #Eugene
