When researchers stimulated cells to produce a protein that helps tardigrades survive extreme environments, the tissue showed much LESS DNA DAMAGE after radiation treatment.

Tardigrades (Water Bears) are virtually indestructible microscopic animals. They survive boiling, freezing, radiation 1,000x lethal to humans, and even the vacuum of space! They can live 30 years without food or water by entering cryptobiosis. These tiny titans prove life's incredible resilience! 🌟

En gros, les tardigrades terrestres, s'ils manquent d'eau, passent dans un état de cryptobiosis, soit quasi mort mais résuscitable (comme d'autres micro-organismes, un type de moucherons, certaines plantes et la plupart des graines).

Et dans cet état, ils résistent mieux au stress.
Tardigrade actif ressemble à une patate à jambes avec toutes ses jambes. S'il se dessèche, il passe en cryptobiosis et devient quasi rond, tout recroquevillé. S'il retrouve de l'eau, il redevient long avec des patates et peut bouger.

Bdelloid rotifers are a microplankton that reproduce using parthenogenesis (female clones), but when environmental conditions become adverse (e.g. pond dries up), they can turn themselves into an extraordinaryly resistant inert "tun" through a process called cryptobiosis (like brine shrimp).
